Master Badger and Friends is an American cartoon from 1993 . The children's film is loosely based on the characters from the two stories A Furling's Story and Furlings by Rae Lambert .

action

The lively little mouse Abigail, the young hedgehog Russell and the shy mole Edgar have lessons with the old badger Cornelius for the first time. He has a surprise in store for you on your first day of school. After showing them his latest invention, a model of a flying machine, he takes them and his niece Michelle for a walk through the woods. In doing so, people come to a street. He explains to the little ones that they should never cross or cross this border. It would be best to forget everything very quickly. While the little ones are paddling along the stream with Cornelius, a truck has an accident on the road, with a load of poison gas pouring into the forest and killing all life. The friends only notice this when they return with Cornelius. To save her parents, Michelle runs into her already gassed den. Abigail follows her and can just save her from poisonous gas death, but any help comes too late for Michelle's parents.

Because Michelle inhaled too much poison gas, she is dying. Cornelius needed the herbs lungwort and eyebright to rescue Michelle within two days. Since the medicinal plants of the local forest have died due to the poison gas, Cornelius asks Abigail, Russel and Edgar to get them in the Danglewood . He also tells them how he once lost his whole family because of the people, which is why the little ones should be careful of people on their journey and always work together. The friends can prove this during the trip, because Abigail is caught by an owl on the way and carried off to her nest. She can free herself again with a trick and successfully escape with the help of Russell and Edgar. However, they got lost and don't know why they are spending the night in the wild for the time being. At night they are woken up by a funeral procession of birds who want to say goodbye to little Bosworth with a mass, who is trapped in a mud pool and threatens to die. After Edgar's idea can free him, the friends find out that they can get to their desired destination past the yellow dragon.

The yellow dragons turn out to be heavy construction vehicles, from which the friends flee into a sewer and finally arrive at their destination. There they have to find out, however, that eyebright grows everywhere, but lungwort only grows on a cliff. To achieve it, they replicate Cornelius' flying machine, which allows them to collect the herb and finally fly back to their forest. Due to a sudden thunderstorm, they crash after hitting a power pole and walk the rest of the way home. In doing so, they come dangerously close to people. Only this time they are not in the forest to hunt animals, but to cleanse it of the poison gas. Cornelius is surprised that they even rescue Edgar from an animal trap and then destroy it. After the humans leave, Cornelius can finally use the herbs to heal Michelle. The other animals, including Abigail's parents, Russell and Edgar, also come back from the woods where they were hiding. Cornelius explains to Michelle that while he cannot replace her parents, he will take care of them as best he can.

criticism

"The story is pathetically thin," criticized the film critic James Berardinelli , "even for the limited demands of the average five-year-old". The "lackluster and very politically correct" plot is far too boring and shows an obvious lack of innovation and creativity. The film also has something good. "Fortunately, the running time is short, so that the parents with their children would not be bored to death".

"The film is cute and gentle, but not very convincing," said renowned film critic Roger Ebert . He also wondered “why so many children's cartoons start with the death of their parents.” Although the film has “a good heart”, it was “somehow stupid.” After all, “children are intelligent and curious”, which the film “does not recognize " wool.

Stephen Holden of the New York Times praised this "sympathetic fable about growing up, learning to work together and developing courage". With its "overly cute comic pictures", the film knows "how to tell a story".

The lexicon of international films said: “A carefully designed cartoon that, due to its traditional narrative and unoriginal typing, leaves some possibilities unused. Pleasant entertainment, especially appealing to smaller children. "
