Open Air Hamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Open Air Hamm is an open air festival and took place for the first time in 1970 in Eich / Rheinhessen . It is one of the oldest open-air festivals in Europe. The number of visitors is between 2000 and 3000 people.

history

Influenced by the appearance of the Rolling Stones in London's Hyde Park and the Woodstock Festival in 1969, some young people from Eicher, including Peter Glasauer, Georg Dehn and Joachim Müller, decided to hold an open-air festival on the sports field in Eich for the first time in the summer of 1970 . With the help of other young people from the old Rhine community, the bands Magic Forest from Worms and Archaeopterix from Gernsheim then played on two tractor roles pushed together .

After a break in 1971, mainly rural youths from 1972 to 1974 played a key role in the organization and implementation of the festival, which was free until 1973, including Jürgen Wildner and Dieter Kölsch, who died in 1974. 1974 was the first entry fee, which was then donated to a lung sick boy from Eich. Furthermore, the festival was extended to two days.

In 1975, Jugendhaus Altrhein e. V. the management of the event. In the following years bands from the Mainz, Worms and Mannheim area performed (Armadillo Texas, Kalif Storch, Klangk, Blues Association, Beelzebub). In the wake of the youth center, anti-nuclear power plant and festival movement, the number of viewers rose steadily until 1979.

In 1980 the festival had to be relocated to the adjacent hard court of the football club because of the sports field in Eich that was completely soaked by the rain. The subsequent difficulties with this association and the local community of Eich prompted the organizers to relocate the festival area to Hamm on the Rheinwiese near the 12 Apostles. It continued in 1981 with a partially new line-up, with higher costs and initially less audience.

The festival continued to develop thanks to nationally known bands such as the Rodgau Monotones , the Big Banana Kombo, the Hopp'n Ex – Group with Jule Neigel and Feinbein as well as a cabaret program with jugglers, fire-eaters and cabaret. In addition, at the end of the eighties, there was a children's and cultural program with theater groups such as the snotty nose theater or carriage rides and numerous hands-on activities for children such as box climbing, a bicycle course, and handicrafts and painting activities.

In addition, the Altrhein environmental initiative came into being within the association, staging several indoor concerts in Hamm and multi-year environmental festivals in Eich, including lectures and concerts with Stefan Traub and the folk band Tom Bombadill. In 1984 these groups formed the Green List Altrhein, which still exists today and is represented in various local parliaments and in the council of the Verbandsgemeinde.

In 1987, due to flooding, the festival had to be relocated to the swimming lake in Eich at short notice , where it was held in bad weather and with only a few spectators. However, the level of awareness of the festival was now so high that the organizers were able to look forward to numerous visitors again in the following year and thus the setback from the previous year was quickly forgotten.

Between 1989 and 2004, numerous established bands such as Sanfte Liebe, Ciao, Chinchilla Green (Berlin) and Big Light (Berlin), Laura and her tigers (Prague), the Pee Wee Blues Gang , Kosho , Sex-Sugar-Blood & Magic, Zaftig, Hole Full of Love, Interstellar Overdrive and Guru Guru or the Mardi Grass Brass Band , but also young groups such as Thaibnakkel, Trash Corner and the San Carlos Pornballs.

Falling income at the events of the previous years led to a disco event in the Eicher Altrheinhalle in January 2003 in order to improve the finances and attract more young people. Furthermore, a traveling exhibition with photos, press articles and texts from 33 years was conceived in 2003, which was presented with live music in Worms , Oppenheim and the VG-Eich museum.

As a new element for the open air, the chill-out tent was added in 2003 , where people could meet, relax and listen to the DJs until the early hours after the music program. Attempts were also made to make the music program on the main stage more interesting for younger people.

During the years 2004 to 2006, the association also organized several reggae parties in Worms . This led to the expansion of the night program in the chill-out tent and in 2006 the first live band was presented there with Philmkraft.

The attempts of recent years to make the festival more interesting for the younger audience were successful and the festival was again attended by numerous young people from the Old Rhine region and from Worms . The Jugendhaus Altrhein e. V. has numerous young people who are still very committed to the organization of the festival.

In 2007, the Global Shtetl Band, a klezmer band that played Jewish jazz, performed for the first time . In addition, the bands Jammin Inc and the Mark Gillespie Band were convincing and in the night program, My name is Gus from Australia was the first electronic band to be engaged.

But in 2007 there was another setback. The greatest risk of any open-air event struck again: bad weather. At the beginning of the festival, gale force winds and hail showers swept over the festival and the event could only take place under muddy conditions, a path made of pallets, many bales of straw in front of the stage and with a lot of luck. Due to the low number of viewers due to the weather, there was a financial deficit, which meant that in the coming years cost-cutting measures had to be carried out in many areas, including the music program.

Nevertheless, in the following two years it was possible to create an attractive program again. So bands like the Transsylvanians, Rangehn and Das Actionteam, but also regional young bands like the Smashbrothers Inc. could be engaged in the main program. In the night program, the Mannheim band Chamäleon was able to convince.

In 2009 the Jugendhaus Altrhein e. V. in Open Air Hamm e. V. renamed and received the charitable status.

In 2010 the festival celebrated its 40th anniversary with around 2500 visitors. In the anniversary year, nationally and internationally known artists such as The Brew from England, Götz Widmann , Cris Cosmo, Rainer von viel or Ratatöska appeared again.

At the 41st Festival in 2011, bands such as Transmitter , Riserva Moac from Italy, Das Actionteam, Kozmic Blue, Vibravoid , Longfingah & Dub Engineers and others performed.

program

The music program mostly consists of bands from the genre rock , reggae , blues , psychedelic and folk , but many other musical styles are also taken into account. After the main acts on stage, DJs also appear in the night program in the chill-out tent. In the evening, many guests gather around the large campfire in the middle of the square. On Saturday afternoons between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. there is also a children's program with theater, carriage rides, box climbing, handicrafts, games and more.
