Oregon City is a city in Oregon and the county seat of Clackamas County . It is located on the southern edge of the Portland Metropolitan Area on Interstate 205 and has a population of 31,859 (2010).
history
Oregon City was founded in 1829 by the Hudson's Bay Company as a sawmill on the Willamette River , was the first city west of the Rocky Mountains to belong to the United States in 1844 and was the capital of the Oregon Territory until 1851 . During this time it was the last stop on the Oregon Trail . The first American newspaper west of the Rocky Mountains was published here in 1846, and in 1849 coins were minted in a short-lived currency of their own. For some time the city was a center of the fur trade and Methodist mission .
During the California gold rush and the boom in shipping on the Pacific coast in the 1850s, Oregon City, which was further inland, lost its importance. In 1869 the city received a railway connection, in 1889 connection to the electricity network, and in 1923 a highway connection.
The town, which had fewer than 1500 inhabitants around 1880, lived for a long time from the timber industry and agriculture. The wood and paper industry shrank in the 1980s. Today high technology and assembly industries dominate. Many residents commute to Portland for work.
The National Park Service has 28 structures and sites in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for Oregon City as of January 3, 2019, including the McLoughlin House National Historic Site , which forms part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site .
