Original Sin is an adult thriller from 2001 with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie in the lead roles. The film is based on the novel Waltz into Darkness by Cornell Woolrich .

action

While looking for a suitable wife, Luis Vargas, owner of a successful coffee plantation in Cuba , met Julia Russell through a newspaper advertisement and, without ever having met her personally, brought her over to marry her. But contrary to expectations, the supposedly inconspicuous Julia turns out to be a beautiful, passionate woman, whom Luis immediately falls for.

But Julia, whose real name is Bonnie and belongs to a traveling theater company, is not who she claims to be. She leads a secret double life and only married Luis to deprive him of his fortune. When Luis finds out, it's already too late. His wife has disappeared with all of his fortune and cannot be found. Angry and at the same time completely desperate with longing, Luis "accidentally" meets a detective who promises to find Julia for him again. Luis meets his wife again in a hotel when she is flirting with an aging and well-heeled colonel . Luis is waiting for her in her room and threatens to kill her, but they both realize that they love each other and so they find their way back to each other.

The detective who actually wanted to help Luis turns out to be Bonnie's secret, lifelong love Billy, who made Bonnie what she is. His sexual and emotional influence on her has not yet completely dissolved, and so she ultimately agrees to his request to kill Luis in order to be able to get the rest of his fortune.

Although Luis knows there is poison in the cup of coffee Bonnie is handing him, he drinks it. Bonnie immediately regrets what she did and tries to save Luis. Billy interferes in this last, desperate act of love. There is a shot in the crush of the train station from which Bonnie and Luis want to flee. Billy dies at the hand of the woman he thought was loathsome to him.

Bonnie is arrested and sentenced to death, but later escapes from prison disguised as a clergyman just before the sentence is due to be carried out. You and Luis find each other again and continue to live together in Morocco .

In the end it remains unclear whether the story is really true as it was told, or whether Bonnie and Luis were the original accomplices.

background

The film is based on the novel Waltz Into Darkness (German waltz into the darkness ) from 1947 by Cornell Woolrich. In 1969, the French director François Truffaut filmed the story under the title La Sirène du Mississippi ( The Secret of the False Bride ).

Reviews

  • Cinema 7/2001 wrote that the plot was "not very original". Angelina Jolie's visual impact was praised.
  • The film-dienst judges that it is a "(v) lavishly equipped love and crime drama, which dilutes the underlying fable about the destructive and healing power of love in favor of a bombastic love story and is exhausted in a craft atmosphere and decorative eroticism. "

Awards

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.

Angelina Jolie was nominated for the 2001 Golden Raspberry for worst actress in this film.
