Carl Anton Oscar Henschel (born June 19, 1837 in Cassel ; † November 18, 1894 ibid) was the owner of the Henschel & Sohn machine factory in Kassel , chairman of the Kassel Chamber of Commerce and a member of parliament.

Entrepreneur

Oscar Henschel was the son of Georg Alexander Carl Henschel and grandson of the company founder Carl Anton Henschel . He attended the upper secondary school in Kassel from 1844 to 1852. He then did a mechanical engineering apprenticeship in the family business and studied at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe from 1855 to 1857 . After completing his studies, he joined his father's company as commercial manager and became a partner in 1859 when he came of age. After the early death of his father in 1860, Oscar Henschel took over the management of the company at the age of 23.

The company experienced a strong boom under the leadership of Oscar Henschel. Oscar Henschel concentrated on the production of locomotives . While the 50th delivered locomotive in the company's history was celebrated on October 4, 1860, over 4,000 locomotives had already been delivered by Oscar Henschel's death in 1894. The number of employees, which had exceeded the 500 limit in 1865, rose to 1,600 in 1894. The founders' crash was also survived - albeit with lost sales and layoffs.

After his death, his son Karl Henschel (born October 3, 1878 in Kassel; † December 11, 1924 there ) became head of the company; Oscar's widow Sophie Henschel took over the business until he came of age . From July 1, 1900, Karl was, along with his mother, a company partner and sole company director.

social commitment

Oscar Henschel and his wife Sophie, née Caesar, whom he married on June 22, 1862 in Cassel, founded a number of social institutions for the workers at the plant. In 1854 his grandfather founded a company health insurance fund. In 1866, Henschels founded an invalids and widows' fund for workers, and in 1870 the company fire brigade. From 1872 the company built workers' houses and rented them to workers for a small rent. In 1873 the company joined the accident insurance. On the occasion of the silver wedding in 1887, the Henschel couple donated the "Henschel Fund to Support Active Workers".

After Oskar Henschel's death, his widow continued social engagement. Company kindergartens, free medical treatment for company employees and family members, a pension fund and a training school for apprentices were set up by her over the next 10 years.
