Oskar Koester
Oskar Köster (born December 8 . Jul / 20th December 1890 greg. In Pöide , island Saaremaa ; † presumably 2. August 1941 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian politician.
Life and politics
Early years
Oskar Köster was born in the village of Pöide (German: Peude ; at that time rural municipality Laimjala , today rural municipality Saaremaa ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa into a family of teachers. In 1908 he graduated from the Kaarma ( Karmel ) teacher training college on Saaremaa. From 1908 to 1923 he worked as a school teacher. In 1910 he passed the tutor's examination in Narva ( Narwa ). With the outbreak of the First World War , Köster was drafted into the Russian army . He received his education in the Tsarist military schools in Poltava and Vilnius . In 1917 he made in Petrograd his high school .

Köster took after independence of Estonia by Russia and the proclamation of the Republic of Estonia in 1918 as a lieutenant in the Estonian War of Independence against Soviet Russia (1918-1920) part. He was awarded the Freedom Cross ( Vabadusrist ) for his services . In addition, he received a sum of money from the Estonian state and, after the Estonian land reform, an estate in Põlula ( Poll ) near Rakvere ( Wesenberg ).
Politician
In the young Republic of Estonia, Köster was politically active. He became mayor of Rägavere ( Raggefer ) and chairman of the district council of Virumaa ( Wierland ). Köster belonged from 1923 to 1935 as a member of the agrarian party Asunike ja Riigirentnike Liit (from 1925 Asunikkude, Riigirentnike ja Väikepõllupidajate Koondis , from 1932/33 electoral alliance with the Põllumeeste Kogud ) in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). and IV. legislative period.
In 1926 Köster founded the newspaper Maa ("Das Land"), which in 1930 was renamed Maaleht ("Landzeitung"). Köster was also the editor in charge.

In March 1934 there was a bloodless coup by the Estonian head of state Konstantin Päts , who from then on ruled with the help of the military. The parties were banned, political life severely restricted and censorship reintroduced.
Köster then went into business. From 1934 to 1940 he was director of the Talu Insurance Company and the Farmers' Cooperative Bank ( Põllupidajate Ühispank ). In 1938 Köster was re-elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigivolikogu ).
With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Oskar Köster was arrested on July 2, 1940. According to official information, he died in the notorious Patarei prison in the Estonian capital in early August 1941.
