biography

Hartwich was the son of the shipbuilder Otto Hartwich and his wife Auguste geb. Klawitter. He graduated from high school in Anklam . He studied Protestant theology at the universities of Tübingen , Halle , Leipzig and Greifswald and was ordained on June 24, 1887. From 1887 he was pastor in Lebehnke / West Prussia and from 1894 pastor in Bremen-Walle . In 1909 he was appointed cathedral preacher at Bremen Cathedral .

After the First World War he was secretary (from 1927 to 1932) of the Bremen Evangelical Church . He was a member of the Olive Branch Lodge .

The national conservative Hartwich spoke out against the Peace Treaty of Versailles and the Allied occupations of the Rhineland in 1919 and 1923 and in 1919 founded the Volksbund Rettet die Ehren . For this reason, Hartwich was popularly known as the “honorary savior” for fun. The Volksbund was supposed to defend the “soldier's honor”: In reality, the German military “remained undefeated in the field” and was only struck down by a “stab in the back”. The pacifists and democrats, socialists and Jews were to blame for the defeat - they would have stabbed the loyal soldiers in the back. ”But Hartwich was also against National Socialism .

In 1925 he received his doctorate in theology from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . He wrote various books, including a. on Christianity in modern times as well as many writings in connection with the Volksbund 'Save honor'. On September 30, 1934, he became emeritus and retired.

Otto Hartwich was married and had five sons.
