Heinz-Georg Binder

Heinz-Georg Wilhelm Binder (born November 22, 1929 in Hamburg ; † February 17, 2009 in Esens ) was a German Protestant theologian and long-time military bishop.

Life

Heinz-Georg Binder grew up in his native Hamburg. After graduating from high school for boys in Hamburg-St. Georg he studied theology in Hamburg, Erlangen and Kiel. After graduating, he was ordained in Hamburg on March 25, 1956.

From 1957 to 1960 he was pastor at St. Andreas in Hamburg-Harvestehude and from 1961 to 1966 advisor for youth policy in the working group of the Ev. Youth of Germany. In this function he was also editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Junge Demokratie and from 1963 to 1967 President of the Council of European National Youth Committees.

From 1966 to 1971 Binder worked as a public pastor in Bremen and in 1971 became secretary of the church committee of the Bremen Evangelical Church .

On February 1, 1977, Binder succeeded Bishop Hermann Kunst as authorized representative of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) at the federal government in Bonn. He held this office until 1992. In 1985 he was appointed military bishop and worked for nine years before handing the task over to Hartmut Löwe .

Heinz-Georg Binder was married and the father of two sons. Binder died on February 17, 2009.
