Otto Kaemmel

Karl Heinrich Otto Kaemmel (born September 25, 1843 in Zittau , † September 19, 1917 in Loschwitz near Dresden ) was a German historian and high school teacher .

Life

Otto Kaemmel was born in 1843 as the son of the high school director Heinrich Julius Kaemmel (1813–1881) and his wife Emilie Kaemmel. He studied history and philological subjects at the University of Leipzig from 1862 to 1866 and submitted his dissertation to the University of Göttingen in 1869 . In the same year he married Auguste Ida Schramm, daughter of the Zittau architect Carl August Schramm . Subsequently, he was a teacher at the grammar school in Plauen until 1874 , after which he switched to the newly founded royal grammar school in Dresden-Neustadt. There he also taught from 1877 to 1879 as a private lecturer in history at the Technical University of Dresden . From 1890 to 1909 he was rector of the Nikolaigymnasium in Leipzig . In 1897 he became a member of the Royal Saxon Commission for History.

In addition to his pedagogical work, he appeared as an author, where he wrote both scientific articles and several history books aimed at a wide range of readers, each of which was widely distributed in several editions. He also contributed to various dictionaries, including the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and Brockhaus' Konversationslexikon . He was particularly interested in the history of Saxony , especially school history.
