Otto Schumann (musicologist)

Otto Emil Schumann (born June 7, 1897 in Hanover , † June 15, 1981 in Bayreuth ) was a German musicologist and university professor. As an editor and freelance writer, he wrote a lot on music and literature.

life and work

Schumann's father was Gustav Bruno Schumann , editor-in-chief of the Volkswacht , the first social democratic daily newspaper. The mother was Anna Emilie Schumann geb. Morgner .

During the First World War Otto Schumann in 1915 was the real grammar school branch of the Council Gymnasium Bielefeld a high school. He joined the Imperial Navy and took part in the entire war as a naval officer . Dismissed after the November Revolution, he studied musicology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin , the Georg August University in Göttingen and the University of Leipzig . From November 1922 he headed the economic and political editorial department of the Neue Leipziger Zeitung . Later he was a music critic for her . In addition, he was a lecturer at the Newspaper Institute of the University of Leipzig from 1923 to 1934 . From 1935 he lived in Traubing and later in Stechendorf , Bayreuth district . He earned his living as a freelance writer in the fields of music , theater and literature . He also translated books from English and French .

Both during the Nazi era and in the post-war period in Germany , he followed anti-Semitic perspectives that shaped the music discourse in the young Federal Republic of Germany . The composers reviled by Schumann include Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Gustav Mahler , Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schönberg .

Schumann wrote two dozen books on opera , operetta , choral music and drama as well as orchestral , chamber and piano music . He also published a literary guide and handbook for authors . Some bestsellers achieved numerous new editions.
