Otto Ulrich von Dewitz , actually: Ulrich Otto von Dewitz , also Ulrich Otto (III.) Von Dewitz (born October 26, 1747 in Groß Miltzow ; † March 24, 1808 ibid) was President of the Privy Council of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

Life

Otto Ulrich von Dewitz (No. 447 of the gender census ) came from the old Pomeranian-Mecklenburg family von Dewitz . As the only son of his father, who died early, the chamberlain in Eutin Christian Wilhelm von Dewitz (1723–1750) and Henriette von Lehsten , he first attended schools in Neubrandenburg and Magdeburg . In 1763 he joined the Prussian hussars for a short time until the end of the war, in order to study law in Göttingen . Then he went to Württemberg to learn hunting. Appointed as heir by an uncle in Leutmark in Schleswig , he entered the Danish equestrian service, where he was finally captain and adjutant to the governor of Schleswig, Carl von Hessen . After a stay in Paris, Duke Adolf Friedrich IV appointed him captain of the Principality of Ratzeburg , as head of the local administration of justice and domains.

In 1792 he was commissioned by the Duke to work out the marriage contracts of the princesses Luise and Friederike , which was connected with the appointment to the Privy Council . He used his diplomatic secondment on the occasion of the siege of Mainz to recommend himself to Duke Charles II , which is why he was promoted to President of the Privy Council when he took office. During his seven-year term of office he was entrusted with envoy orders to England and Prussia, the latter accompanied by the duke to visit the sick Prussian king. He also succeeded in regulating the difficult financial situation in the country. In addition, he was involved in making the Elde navigable , which was not uncontroversial at the time , providing for the poor, the township and setting up a prison in Strelitz. After his release in 1800 he worked as a farmer on his property, which he knew how to enlarge.

Part of the estate, which arose from the leasing and management of the Neumarkian goods Blankenhagen , Raminshof and Piepstock with a glassworks, is in the Schwerin state archive .

family

From his marriage to Barbara von Maltzahn adH Rottmanshagen (1764-1811) he had five children, including Adolph von Dewitz (1787-1816), the father of Ulrich Otto von Dewitz , and Otto Ernst von Dewitz . The daughter Wilhelmine (1792–1875) married Carl von Oertzen .
