The Ouragan- class consisted of two dock landing ships that were in service with the French Navy from 1965 to 2007 . The French name was Transport de chalands de débarquement (TCD) and translated means landing craft transporter . In NATO , the ships were classified as Landing Ship Dock (LSD) .

Furnishing

The well deck was characteristic of the Ouragan class . It was 120 m long, 13.2 m wide and had an area of 1584 m². The dock could accommodate either two LCT of the type EDIC / CDIC, eight LCM , one LCT and four LCM or other boats and barges , all fully loaded.

Above the well deck was a mobile, 36-meter long helicopter deck , which consisted of six sections. A permanent helicopter deck was arranged in the foredeck next to the bridge superstructure . Both decks were designed for medium-weight Super Frelon transport helicopters .

To increase the transport capacity, a temporary deck for material or vehicles could be built in the well deck. The additional deck increased the transport capacity to 1,500 tons, but halved the dock space for the landing craft. Two ship cranes with 35 t SWL each were installed for material handling .

Both ships could be used as flagship for amphibious operations . A hospital with 19 beds was also set up on the Orage . The ship's crew consisted of 205 men and 343 soldiers for the amphibious operation. If necessary, another 129 people could be accommodated. With embarked personnel the sea endurance was 30 days.

Armament

The armament was purely defensive and consisted of two starters for Mistral - aircraft missiles , two 40-mm anti-aircraft guns and four 12.7 mm machine guns .

drive

The dock landing ships were propelled by two SEMT-Pielstick marine diesel engines that worked on two controllable pitch propellers . The maximum speed was 17 knots . At a cruising speed of 15 knots, the range was 9,000 nautical miles .

units

Both ships were built by the Direction des Constructions Navales in Brest .
