The Papa Binne's Jazz Band , founded by the trumpeter Lutz Binneboese , is an amateur band. It is considered one of the oldest German jazz bands and was one of the most important representatives of the GDR jazz scene in the field of hot jazz .

history

The band was founded in November 1959 by Lutz Binneboese (* 1942) in Berlin as a school band and made its first appearance on November 11, 1959 at a carnival event of a high school. Papa Binnes Hot Five , as the band called itself at the time, was created at a time when jazz in the GDR was still not recognized by official cultural policy . In the beginning, the band played jazzy dance music and hits and performed mainly in student clubs. In the course of the official recognition of jazz in the GDR, the Dixieland gained more and more the upper hand. Since 1961 the band has been called Papa Binne's Jazz Band . While the band was initially based exclusively on English trad bands, the stylistic concept became more versatile over the years. This resulted in predominantly soul-influenced modern jazz compositions.

With the swing versions of the children's songs “Bummilied” and “When Mum Goes to Work Early”, the band was one of the initiators of the “Kinder-Dixieland” series of events. For five years she worked in Benno Besson's production of Peace at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. From 1970, guest performances followed in Poland, the CSSR , Italy, Scotland and the Federal Republic of Germany together with the actors Dieter Mann and Fred Düren . This was followed by his own concerts in socialist and western countries. In 1976 the band first appeared at the International Dixieland Festival in Dresden and in 1977 at the Old Jazz Meeting in Warsaw .

On GDR television she was u. a. can be seen in Berlin Original and Ein Kessel Buntes . With the exception of Oliver Küntzel, Stefan Katzenbeier and Thomas Walter Maria, the band members have remained amateurs to this day.
