action

There are mysterious, inexplicable occurrences in the house of the young couple Julie and Dennis: indefinable noises, someone activates light switches, things move. To find an explanation, Dennis begins filming certain areas of the house around the clock. Since Dennis makes wedding videos for a living, he has access to a considerable number of cameras and other equipment . Even the recording of the first night reveals nocturnal activities of the six-year-old Kristi: she is talking to her imaginary friend Toby. Dennis evaluates the footage with his stepdaughter and learns more about Toby's appearance. But she can't tell him what she's talking to Toby about, otherwise she would get in great trouble. A considerable number of haunted scenarios are subsequently recorded. The closet in the children's room turns out to be the source of the paranormal activity. Dennis finds a magical mark scrawled on the wall inside the chamber. He hires his buddy Randy to get material from the library to do some research .

One night Kristi stands in her parents' bedroom for more than an hour and watches them almost motionless as they sleep. From her subsequent monologue it can be concluded that she refuses to obey Toby in the future and will no longer speak to him. The next morning Julie and Dennis drive to the doctor with their daughter Kristi because she has a high fever. Randy is supposed to take care of Kristi's eight-year-old sister Katie during this time. Katie wants to play "Bloody Mary" with him. You lock yourself in the washroom on the upper floor, turn off the light and whisper "Bloody Mary" three times. According to Katie's statement, a dead person is now expected to appear. Instead, a brief commotion arises in the pitch-dark room. Randy turns the light back on and notices a large scratch under his shirt. Now he is afraid. In addition, the bathroom door is shaken shortly afterwards with a great roar from the outside. Now Katie is also terrified.

An invisible force, presumably Toby, attacks Katie several times over the next few days - she is brutally grabbed by the hair, she is dragged across the floor, something stands in her way or blows in her face - until Kristi her imaginary friend Toby promises to meet his demands (hidden from viewers at all times). Kristi no longer wants to stay in the house and begs at the next opportunity that she wants to visit grandma. Julie refuses her daughter's request on the grounds that there is no ghost. When all the kitchen utensils fall from the ceiling, there is no stopping Julie either.

But they are no better with grandmother Lois either. The situation is even getting worse here. Julie wants to confront her mother with loud noises outside and in the house at night. She leaves the room and leaves Dennis alone. He waits restlessly and does not notice that Lois is briefly standing silently behind him. Dennis searches the house, Julie and the girls are nowhere to be found. The pictures in the house were removed from the wall and drawn magic signs became visible behind them. Dennis sees the silhouette of Lois behind a curtain. In the adjacent tool shed , a séance- like meeting of about half a dozen elderly women takes place, who react to Dennis bursting in with silent discomfort and lethargic movements. Dennis flees back into the house and sees Julie floating lifeless in the air on the top landing. Toby throws Julie at Dennis, they both fall down the stairs. Now Dennis finds Kristi and later Katie too, crouching on the stairs, disturbed, staring at her dead mother. She pushes Dennis to the ground with a demonic gesture and escapes. While Dennis can only crawl across the floor, Grandmother Lois appears in the room. While she looks at Dennis motionless, Toby breaks his spine. Lois then leads both girls up the stairs to the top of the house. Kristi asks Toby in a lovely voice to follow them.

Reviews

"Without drastic effects, but also without convincingly staged fear scenarios, the film seeks its tension in an extremely simple ghost train dramaturgy, which generates its horror mainly from waiting for foreseeable moments of shock."

“Paranormal Activity 3 is unlikely to make new friends, but will keep the existing fan base happy. The film appears a bit more polished than its predecessors and focuses a bit more on “normal” horror, but basically it sticks again to the at the same time curious and damn effective mixture of static boredom, hysterical wiggling and barely noticeable “haunted house” rumblers, which are always can become juicy shocks. "

- Martin Beck

"With $ 52 million on the first weekend," Paranormal Activity 3 "once again surpassed the record of Part 2 - and this success is not entirely undeserved either: Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are doing a lot right and are again relying on those simple, but effective shock effects that make the audience jump out of their seats with a screeching regularity. "
