Cardinal László Pacifik Paskai OFM (born May 8, 1927 in Szeged , † August 17, 2015 in Esztergom ) was a Hungarian clergyman and Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest .

Life

László Paskai was born to parents who converted from Judaism to Christianity and who later became victims of the Holocaust . After his school days he entered the Franciscan order and studied Catholic theology in Gyöngyös and at the seminary of Budapest .

On March 3, 1951, he received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a parish chaplain in the diocese of Nagyvárad . In 1952 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Budapest and then took up the post of Episcopal Ceremonial in his hometown of Szeged .

From 1955 to 1962 he taught as a professor of theology and philosophy at the seminary in Szeged and worked as a librarian. From 1962 to 1965 he looked after the candidates for priesthood at the seminary in Szeged as a spiritual director , and from 1965 to 1973 he performed the same task at the seminary in Budapest, which he headed from 1973 to 1978 as rector.

On March 2, 1978 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Bavagaliana and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Veszprém . He received the episcopal ordination on April 5th of the same year by the Archbishop of Esztergom, Cardinal László Lékai . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Eger , László Kádár OCist , and the Bishop of Székesfehérvár , Imre Kisberk . A year later, on March 31, 1979, László Paskai was appointed Bishop of Veszprém by Pope John Paul II . On April 5, 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa , and then on March 3, 1987, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest. From 1986 to 1989 László Paskai was President of the Hungarian Bishops' Conference.

On June 28, 1988 he was accepted into the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Teresa al Corso d'Italia . On December 7, 2002, he resigned from the leadership of the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese for reasons of age. After his resignation, it became known that László Paskai had worked as an informal employee for the State Security Service Államvédelmi Hatóság . He merely said: “It was good for everyone that the clergy had spoken to the authorities; that was just necessary ”.

Cardinal Paskai participated in the 2005 conclave that Benedict XVI. elected to the Pope. The 85-year-old cardinal no longer took part in the 2013 conclave because he had already passed the age limit of 80 years.

He died on August 17, 2015 in Esztergom at the age of 88.

Cardinal Paskai OFM was the first Grand Prior of the Order of Hungary of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

He was also a member of the Lazarus order and from 2005 to 2012 spiritual protector of the order and general chaplain. His successor has been Cardinal Duka since September 21, 2012 .
