Paul Copley (born November 25, 1944 in Denby Dale , West Yorkshire , England ) is a British actor .

Life

Copley began his career in the theater and made his feature film debut in 1973 in the comedy Father Dear Father , in which his wife Natasha Pyne played the female lead. In 1975 he played a bigger role in Ken Hughes ' Alfie, the philosopher's love affair . In 1977 he was seen as Private Wicks in the war film Die Brücke von Arnhem ; in The Last Offensive 1979 as Corporal Storey. In the decades that followed, his career shifted to television. In addition to guest appearances on British television series such as Inspector Lynley , Life on Mars - Trapped in the 70s , Inspector Barnaby and Don't Tell Me , he played numerous recurring roles. These include the role of the pathologist in the successful crime series For all cases Fitz from 1993 to 1995, the Algernon Rowan-Webb in A Lousy Witch and Clement McDonald in Torchwood . He gained fame with international television audiences through his portrayal of Mr. Mason in 16 episodes of Downton Abbey between 2011 and 2015.

In the 1990s he played minor roles in What Was Left of the Day and Hearts in Turmoil . In addition, he was repeatedly on the theater stage, including at the Royal Court Theater , the Royal National Theater , the Globe Theater and the Gate Theater . In 1976, he received the Laurence Olivier Award in the Actor of the Year in a New Play category for his performance in For King And Country . From September to November 2012 he played the title role of King Lear in a production of the Royal Shakespeare Company . He also acts as an off-speaker for TV commercials for the supermarket chain Wm Morrison Supermarkets .
