Paul Stein (born March 27, 1949 in Neuwied ; † August 6, 2004 in Moselkern ) was a German graphic artist and book artist.

Life

Paul Stein spent his childhood in Neuwied-Heddesdorf . In 1963 he began an apprenticeship and then worked as a gravure retoucher. After he had completed his military service (1968/69), dissatisfaction grew in his profession and in 1971 he began studying graphic design at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences . After completing his studies, Stein moved to the Westerwald and lived in Hattert from 1980 . In 1985 he decided to give up the job he had originally learned and to devote himself exclusively to art. In 1995 Stein moved to Völkenroth in the Hunsrück and in 2000 to a house in Moselkern directly on the Moselle . Paul Stein died there suddenly and unexpectedly in 2004.

Paul Stein was an avid soccer player all his life and was active as a goalkeeper for various clubs.

The focus of Paul Stein's art is on painting and artist books (unique pieces). In addition, countless recordings of various forms were created. Here, for example, his daily sketch / work / diary should be mentioned: The artist documented his life in 90 volumes and on a good 19,000 numbered pages. Tales from his everyday life alternate with fictional stories, ballpoint pen sketches are followed by fully elaborated pictures using a wide variety of techniques. The volumes are now in the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach am Main .

Since 1984 Paul Stein's book art work has been supervised by Despalles Éditions (Françoise Despalles and Johannes Strugalla). Stein et al. Worked with Strugalla. a. together for the artist book “Chaff”. Despalles also made regular participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions possible ( Frankfurter Buchmesse , SAGA and Marché de la Poesie, Paris , Art Edition, Basel (1990–92), Art Frankfurt (until 2004)).

Exhibitions

In the mid-1970s Paul Stein had his first exhibitions of his own work, for example in the Städtische Galerie im Brückenturm, Mainz , in the clock tower in Dierdorf , in the Otto Buhr gallery in Neuwied and in the Artfusion gallery in Mainz. There he was also involved in the publication of the magazine of the same name as well as “UnArt” and “Lose Blätter für Kunst”. From 1985 to 2004 Stein was involved in numerous exhibitions: u. a. Kunstverein Mainz (1985), Galerie Horst Dietrich, Berlin, Caroline Corre, Paris (1987), Galerie Tendenz, Sindelfingen (1988, 1993), Galerie an der Stadtkirche, Bayreuth (1990), Eutektikum, Munich (1991), Maison Rhénanie- Palatinat, Dijon , Landtag Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz (1994), Waldthausen Castle (1995), Neuerkirch Art Barn (1996), in Nieder-Olm and Pfullendorf (1997), Galerie Veste Otzberg (1998), Museum of Applied Arts Frankfurt (2000 ), Queichtal Museum, Offenbach near Landau (2001), in Koblenz , Cochem and Marbach am Neckar (2003). In 1995 Stein accepted an invitation from the German Book Trade Association to attend exhibitions in Plovdiv and Varna (Bulgaria). In 1999 the artist spent two weeks in Shijiazhuang and Beijing (China), where he took part in the exhibition "Contrasts - Exhibition of Chinese and German Artists".
