Paul Wilson, Baron Wilson of High Wray

Paul Norman Wilson, Baron Wilson of High Wray OBE KStJ DSC (* 24. October 1908 ; † 24. February 1980 ) was a British hydraulic engineer and politician , who from 1965 to 1974 Lord Lieutenant of the County of Westmorland and subsequent to his death Was Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria and became a member of the House of Lords in 1976 as Life Peer under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .

Life

Wilson, whose father Norman Foster Wilson was also an engineer and between 1928 and 1930 mayor of Kendal , completed an engineering degree at Clare College at the University of Cambridge after attending the traditional Gresham's School . In the following years he dealt with technical innovations in the field of hydraulics and among other things developed a hydraulic brake for which a patent was applied for on February 20, 1950 .

On November 15, 1963 Wilson was first sheriff and then on May 4, 1964 Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Westmorland County.

On November 12, 1965 he succeeded Henry Hornyold-Strickland Lord Lieutenant of the County of Westmorland and held this position until March 31, 1974. On December 20, 1966 he was Knight of Justice of the Order of Saint John (KStJ).

After Westmorland was united on April 1, 1974 together with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire to form the new county of Cumbria, Wilson became the first Lord Lieutenant of this new county. He held this position until his death in 1980, when he was succeeded by John Charles Wade .

By a letters patent dated February 3, 1976, Wilson was raised to the nobility under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a life peer with the title Baron Wilson of High Wray , of Kendal in the County of Cumbria, and thus belonged to the House until his death of Lords as a member. Its official introduction ( Introduction ) took place on March 3, 1976 with the support of Barbara Wootton, Baroness Wootton of Abinger and Annie Llewelyn-Davies, Baroness Llewelyn-Davies of Hastoe .
