Pauline Peugniez
Pauline Peugniez (born April 28, 1890 in Amiens , † 1987 in Paris ) was a French painter and glass painter . She was a student of Maurice Denis . Between the two world wars, it made a major contribution to the renewal of sacred art with its leaded glass windows and wall paintings in churches.
Life
Pauline Peugniez came from a middle-class family, her father was a surgeon and her mother's father was a notary . After high school, she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Amiens and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There she met her future husband Jean Hébert-Stevens , the cousin of the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens , whom she married in 1915.
While Pauline Peugniez continued her education, her husband became a well-known glass painter. His acquaintance with the Dominican Marie Alain Couturier and his participation in the Ateliers d'art sacré , which were founded in 1919 by Maurice Denis and George Desvallières (1861–1950), led Pauline and her husband mainly to create church windows.
In 1923 they set up a joint workshop on Rue de Bagneux in Paris. In 1937 they were commissioned to make windows in the nave of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Pauline Peugniez also created cardboard boxes for carpets that were manufactured in the Paris tapestry factory and in the carpet factory in Aubusson . She participated in exhibitions of the Société nationale des beaux-arts , the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne (from 1920).
Pauline Peugniez and her husband worked intensively with Adeline Hébert-Stevens, the sister of Jean Hébert-Stevens, who was married to Paul Bony, and with Jacques Bony. All of them were glass painters and, as in the Saint-Medard church in Paris, it is not always possible to determine exactly who drew the boxes and who was involved in making the windows.
