Paweł Ksawery Zalewski (born September 25, 1964 in Warsaw ) is a Polish historian , businessman and politician . He was a member of the Sejm in the 1st , 5th and 6th legislative periods ; Member of the European Parliament between 2009 and 2014 .

Life

In 1990 Zalewski graduated from Warsaw University with a degree in history . From 1991 to 1996 he worked as an adjunct at Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie and in 1996 in an international consulting firm.

During the 1980s , Zalewski was involved in opposition publications and was a member of the Independent Student Association . During the discussions at the round table , he dealt with higher education within a working group. Between 1989 and 1991 he was an advisor to the Minister of Education. In addition, co-founder of the conservative party Forum Prawicy Demokratycznej ( German  forum of the democratic right ), which entered into a cooperation with the Unia Demokratyczna in 1991 . In the 1991 parliamentary election , Zalewski was elected to the Sejm as a candidate for the Unia Demokratyczna list. Between 1992 and 1993 member of the Partia Konserwatywna . After leaving, he founded the Koalicja Konserwatywna in 1994 with Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski , which was incorporated into the Conservative People's Union in 1999 . In the People's Union, Zalewski was deputy chairman of the party council. In 2001 he co-founded the Alliance of Right , which was integrated into Law and Justice the following year . In the PiS Zalewski was a member of the party executive and later held the deputy party chairmanship.

Between 2002 and 2003 he was a member of the Masovian Voivodeship Council . On the occasion of the European elections in 2004 , he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the PiS party from the constituency of Łódź . In the 2005 parliamentary elections , he was elected to the Sejm from the Sieradz constituency. In the 5th electoral term he chaired the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

In July 2007, party chairman Jarosław Kaczyński deposed him from his internal party functions because of alleged disloyalty to the party, government and president. The allegations related to a radio interview on July 3, 2007, in which Zalewski had criticized the then Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga . In October of the same year the disciplinary proceedings against him were lifted so that he could resume his functions in the party.

For the 2007 parliamentary election , Zalewski won a seat for the third time with 35,524 votes. Shortly thereafter, he resigned his party-internal offices together with the deputy party chairmen Ludwik Dorn and Kazimierz Ujazdowski . By order of Jarosław Kaczyński everyone has had their membership rights withdrawn. On December 12, 2007, Zalewski and Ujazdowski gave up their party membership. In 2008 the Mazowsze XXI Association was founded with the participation of Zalewski. This belonged to the nationwide initiative Ruch Obywatelski "Polska XXI" .

In 2009 he was set up by the citizens' platform for the 2009 European elections and later also joined the party. He became a member of the European Parliament with 51,529 votes . In the European Parliament , he joined the Christian Democrats and was elected Vice-Chair of the Committee on International Trade . In July 2011, he initiated the European Parliament-Ukraine LINK Group , which includes MEPs from various political groups and is intended to support Ukraine's integration process into the European Union . In January 2013, then Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski appointed him Co-President of the Polish-Ukrainian Partnership Forum. In the course of the 2014 European elections , Zalewski ran in vain for re-election. In 2016 he became a member of the Council of the Citizens' Institute (Polish: Instytut Obywatelski ).

Awards

In 2011 he took fifth place in a ranking for lobbying for Ukraine by the Institute for World Politics in Kiev. The news magazine Polityka named him the best MP in 2006/2007.
