Act

Archbishop Pedro Meurice Estiú was considered a pillar of the Cuban Catholic Church and was a sharp critic of the regime of Fidel Castro .

“During Pope John Paul II's historic visit to Cuba, he publicly attacked the then Prime Minister Fidel Castro at the beginning of a service on January 24, 1998 with harsh words. In the presence of Fidel Castro's brother and later successor Raúl Castro , Meurice declared that the Cubans had to “demystify the false messiahs” and deplored the division of the people through exile. After the death of John Paul II in 2005, Fidel Castro took part in a funeral mass led by Meurice in Havana; he declared that he would not bring the incident to the archbishop. "

The archbishop's public criticism was particularly important because not only did the international media public take part in the papal visit, but the service was also broadcast live on Cuban television. For the first time in the country since Fidel Castro took all of the country's media under his unrestricted control, shortly after the revolution, the Cubans saw a Cuban criticizing the president in front of the entire nation. Meurice's successor García Ibáñez had the same opportunity in March 2012, when he also gave the words of welcome for Pope Benedict XVI. at the beginning of his service in Santiago de Cuba said: When García Ibáñez remembered Meurice's historical words during his address, spontaneous applause broke out among the more than 200,000 present.
