Per Leo

Per Leo (* 1972 in Erlangen ) is a German writer and historian .

Life

Leo grew up in Munich, where he attended the Oskar-von-Miller-Gymnasium . His ancestors and relatives include the Vegesack shipbuilder Johann Lange , the historian Heinrich Leo and the Bremen SPD politician Detmar Leo .

Per Leo (2014)

He did his community service at the Wadden Sea Protection Station on the North Sea island of Pellworm and studied history , philosophy and Slavic studies first in Freiburg, then in Berlin . In 2009 he received his doctorate with Wolfgang Hardtwig at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on Ludwig Klages and the tradition of characterological thinking .

His novel Flood and Ground about the family of his grandfather Friedrich Leo (1908-1993), a former SS-Sturmbannführer in the Race and Settlement Main Office , was shortlisted for the Leipzig Book Fair in 2014 . For the novel, which is partly set in the Vegesack Villa Bischoff , Leo was awarded the Klaus-Michael Kühne Prize of the Harbourfront Literature Festival in 2014 and the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize of the City of Bad Homburg in 2016.

In the book Talking to the Right , which he wrote together with Maximilian Steinbeis and Daniel-Pascal Zorn , Leo promotes the argumentation of right-wing populist and new-right positions instead of excluding them from the discourse. The book has been widely debated. As a result, Leo pleaded for the confrontation with right-wing populism and the New Right to be conducted more strategically.

Leo wrote articles and essays in u. a. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit , Die Welt , Der Freitag , Merkur , Neue Rundschau published.

He lives as a freelance writer and casket producer with his family in Berlin.
