Peter Esser (actor)
Peter Joseph Maria Esser (born April 4, 1886 in Düsseldorf ; † June 24, 1970 there ) was a German actor .
Life
Peter Esser was born in Düsseldorf as the second son of the brewery owner and innkeeper Wilhelm Esser. He grew up in " Kappes-Hamm ". He attended the Royal High School , and even during his school days (around 1903) Esser worked together on school performances with his childhood friends Paul Henckels , Heinrich Spoerl and Hans Müller-Schlösser , who later also became popular as actors and writers . They founded the "literary reading circle" and studied the student play Alt-Heidelberg , Esser in the role of Hereditary Prince Karl-Heinrich. However, the piece was not performed, this was forbidden by the teaching staff.
In 1904, Esser attended a dance course with Spoerl and Müller-Schlösser in the "Bürgergesellschaft" hall on Schadowstrasse , with Mrs. Ernst-Huchhausen, a former dancer of the city theater .
Peter Esser, called Pedder by his schoolmates , was supposed to learn a “decent job” at the request of his parents. Despite his secret desire to become an actor, he bowed down and, like his older brother Albert Esser (1885–1972), studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau . He made his Dr. jur. and brought it to the assessor . His brother Albert switched to medicine and became an eminent ophthalmologist and medical historian.
But he hung the gown on the nail and climbed onto the “unsafe floor” of the stage. He started with Louise Dumont at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf . His ambition to be a consummate speaker, and he has become. The Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf was known as a reform stage. Peter Esser became an important stage artist and taught at the affiliated "Theater Academy". One of his most famous students was Gustaf Gründgens , who received his training in 1919/1920 at the Hochschule für Bühnenkunst of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf.
In 1923, director Gerhard Lamprecht attempted to visualize Roman Buddenbrooks , published by Thomas Mann on February 26, 1901, with his complex portrait of society for the still silent screen, and created a tragically sad film with a length of originally 120, which was unusual for the time Minutes. In this film only individual storylines of the literary original were recorded; Thomas Buddenbrook acts as the focal point. After the death of his father, he takes over the business of the trading family, but has to watch how their old world and existence dissolve more and more. The star Peter Esser played the leading role as Thomas Buddenbrook.
In 1962 Ivo Beucker made the portrait of Peter Esser out of bronze. The bust is now in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus .
In Meerbusch (near Düsseldorf) on Birkenweg (today Erlenweg) he had a house built, into which he took in his friends Werner and Mira Heuser after the Second World War . They lived there together. Peter Esser remained unmarried.
In accordance with his last will, Peter Esser was quietly cremated.
