Peter Gerber (politician)

Peter Gerber (born June 8, 1923 in Frienisberg ; † April 11, 2012 , entitled to live in Langnau im Emmental ) was a Swiss agronomist and politician ( SVP ).

biography

Gerber attended schools in Baggwil , Aarberg and Bern . From 1945 to 1949 he studied agronomy at the ETH Zurich . From 1951 to 1957 he was adjunct and from 1957 to 1988 administrator of the Frienisberg retirement and nursing home .

In 1953 Gerber was elected to the local council (the executive) of Seedorf and in 1957 he was the local president. From 1962 to 1979 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern and chaired it in the 1975/76 year of office. From 1979 to 1987 he was a member of the Council of States and served as President of the Council of States in 1985/86 . In his political offices he devoted himself primarily to agricultural policy .

Gerber headed the beet growers 'association of the Aarberg sugar factory and the Bernese farmers' association. From 1974 to 1988 he was President of the Swiss Farmers' Association , whose structures he reformed considerably by revising the statutes in 1979. He led the Swiss Mobiliar Insurance Company as a member of the board of directors . Gerber, who was a colonel in the Swiss Army , was a member of the Council for General Defense . From 1979 he was a member and from 1989 to 1993 President of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank . Gerber was a member of the Swiss student union Helvetia Zurich.
