Peter Gottwald (diplomat)

Klaus Peter Gottwald (* 1948 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school, Gottwald studied administrative sciences at the University of Konstanz and graduated in 1973 as one of the first 12 graduate administrative scientists. He then completed a postgraduate degree in international relations at Syracuse University in 1974 with a master's degree in international relations and was then head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) office in Kaduna (Nigeria) until 1976 .

After his return to Germany, he joined the Foreign Service in 1977 and, after completing his career examination, worked from 1979 to 1980 in the Office of State Secretaries at the Foreign Office in Bonn , before being employed by the Permanent Mission to UNESCO in Paris . From 1981 to 1984 he was press, legal and consular officer at the embassy in Finland and until 1987 employee in the press department of the Foreign Office.

Between 1987 and 1990 Gottwald was a consultant for disarmament and security policy at the embassy in the USA and then deputy head of division for the Geneva Disarmament Conference at the Foreign Office until 1993 , before he was an exchange diplomat in the planning staff of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1993 to 1994 .

He then stayed in London and was head of the press department at the embassy in Great Britain until 1998. After returning to Germany, he was Head of the North America Division at the Foreign Office in Berlin between 1998 and 2002 and then took up a year-long fellowship at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University . He was then from 2003 to 2006 Envoy and Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to the USA.

Subsequently, until 2008, Gottwald was ambassador and head of the permanent representation to the United Nations in Vienna and the other international organizations based in Vienna . In this position he succeeded Herbert Honsowitz , who in turn became ambassador to Iran . Thereafter, between 2008 and 2011, he was the Federal Government Commissioner for questions of disarmament and arms control.

From August 2011 Peter Gottwald, succeeding Axel Berg and was as ambassador to Switzerland and also as ambassador to Liechtenstein accredited . In September 2013 he handed over the office to Otto Lampe and retired.

Since the end of his career as an active diplomat, Gottwald has been involved as director of the International Futures Program in the international diplomatic training of the Federal Foreign Office. Furthermore, he has been chairman of the Alumni Association of the University of Konstanz and a member of the board of the German Foundation for Peace Research since 2015 .

He is married and has three daughters.
