Peter Greeff
Johann Peter Karl Greeff (born October 18, 1865 at Haus Düssel in Wülfrath , Mettmann district , Rhine Province ; † May 11, 1939 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter and lithographer of the Düsseldorf School and an officer of the Prussian cavalry .
Life
Greeff, offspring of the industrial family Greeff in Barmen , son of the landowner Johann Peter Greeff (1841–1866) and his wife Pauline Wilhelmine, née Greeff (1842–1899), lost his father, who died in the Battle of Königgrätz , in the first year of his life. He attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the school years 1881 and 1882 . There were Heinrich Lauenstein and Hugo Crola his teachers. Greeff received military training with the 2nd Westphalian Hussar Regiment No. 11 , whose reserve officer he became. In 1889/1890 he attended the Grand Ducal Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe , where he was a master student of Gustav Schönleber . On April 21, 1892, he married Clara Langerfeld (1868–1923), who gave birth to two daughters and a son. The family lived in Düsseldorf - Pempelfort , where Greeff held prominent positions in the artists' association Malkasten and in the association for the organization of art exhibitions . In the First World War he initially went to the front, but when he was no longer capable of performing combat duties, he was given command of the squadron of a Landwehr regiment in Münster as Rittmeister .
As a landscape painter, Greeff made a name for himself with water, break and birch motifs, as well as depicting winter and autumn forest and mountain areas. From 1892 he sent the Munich Glass Palace , from 1893 to the Great Berlin Art Exhibition , and from 1902 he was a participant in the Great Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf . As a lithographer, he supplied the newspaper Die Rheinlande .
