Peter Joseph Schneider (medical doctor)

Peter Joseph Schneider , also Peter Josef Schneider (born July 7, 1791 in Stupferich , † June 22, 1871 in Offenburg ) was a Baden doctor , musicologist and philosopher .

Life

Peter Joseph Schneider attended high schools in Baden and Rastatt . From 1811 he studied medicine at the University of Würzburg and graduated there in 1814 with a doctorate.

After moving a few times, he became a resident doctor in medicine, surgery and obstetrics in Ettlingen . From 1821 he was a physician in Ettenheim .

In the course of an ordinance to improve the establishment of the Jewish ritual baths, he became involved in the modernization of these mikvahs from 1822 .

In 1831 he was promoted to the Grand Duke of Baden Medical Council and moved to Offenburg in 1832 to accept the position of physicist there. Until 1835 he was also a doctor of philosophy and music .

In 1835 he founded the State Medical Association together with Ignaz Schürmayer in Offenburg, where he had moved, and became the publisher of the journal Annalen der Staatsarzneikunde , which was affiliated with the association and later continued as the United German Journal for State Medicine. In the same year he published a series of books on the sense of hearing and found that “everything that concerns the ear is very easily perceived by the mind” (in System einer Medizinischen Musik , Volume 1, p. 54).

In 1840 he refused an appointment to the medical commission and from 1842 to 1864 he was medical assistant at the court court of the Middle Rhine District.

In 1868 he retired and was made a Knight of the Zähringer Lion Order. He died of paralysis .

He was married to Maria Sophia Engelberger (1796–1863), a daughter of Ignaz Engelberger . His son was the later lawyer Richard Schneider .

Peter Joseph Schneider was a member of the Grand Ducal Baden Agricultural Association, the Natural Research Society in Halle and the Royal Saxon Society for Mineralogy in Dresden.
