Richard Karl Schneider (born May 2, 1823 in Ettenheim , † November 3, 1911 in Karlsruhe ) was a German lawyer . Schneider was the Grand Duke of Baden president of the Higher Regional Court in Karlsruhe , the highest judicial authority of the Grand Duchy, as well as a member of the first chamber of the Badische States General .

Life

Family and studies

Richard was born the son of Peter Joseph Schneider . His father was a doctor of medicine and an official physicist for the Grand Duke of Baden in Ettenheim. His mother Maria Sophia (1796–1863) was born Engelberger, a daughter of Ignaz Engelberger .

He first attended the elementary school in Ettenheim. From 1833 to 1838 he went to the grammar school in Offenburg and from 1838 to 1840 to the lyceum in Rastatt . From 1840 to 1842 Schneider began studying law at the University of Freiburg , which he continued and completed at the University of Heidelberg from 1842 to 1844 . In addition to the legal lectures and seminars, in which Roman law and the Napoleonic Code civil still played a large role, he also attended lectures on metaphysics and the history of philosophy .

Professional background

In 1845 he passed the first state examination in law . In the same year he was accepted into the Baden judicial service. From 1845 to 1848 Schneider worked as a legal trainee and actuary as well as an independent responsible and service administrator at the Baden Oberamt Offenburg . In 1848 he was a temporary administrator at the cork office . From 1849 to 1852 Schneider was appointed as an assessor at the Lahr Regional Office and from 1852 to 1854 as an assessor at the Freiburg im Breisgau municipal office .

From 1854 Schneider was assessor at the court court of the Seekreis in Constance and permanent representative of the public prosecutor at the court court of Constance. From 1856 to 1864 he was court judge in Constance. In 1864, with the introduction of the new Baden court organization and the Baden court constitution law, he became district court director in Waldshut and in 1869 district and court director in Konstanz. As early as 1868 he received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Zähringer Lion Order for his services . From 1872 Schneider was also given the chairmanship of the examination committee for the second state examination in law, which he held until 1898 and which took up a large part of his time. On his 70th birthday, for example, he received a congratulatory message from almost 500 former candidates.

In 1877 he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the Higher Court in Karlsruhe. At the same time, Schneider was appointed an extraordinary member of the State Ministry. In 1879, when the Reich Justice Laws came into force , he was Senate President of the Higher Regional Court in Karlsruhe until 1892. As early as 1880 he was awarded the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Zähringen Order of Lions and in 1891 the star for this cross. In 1892 he was appointed President of the Higher Regional Court in Karlsruhe, the highest court in the Grand Duchy of Baden, and was given the title Real Privy Councilor . The Baden Grand Duke Friedrich I personally appointed him a member of the first chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly in 1893. Schneider himself was a long-time member of the National Liberal Party and a member of the Justice Commission in the Estates Assembly. There he was significantly involved in the creation and adoption of the transitional laws for the introduction of the civil code . In 1894 he received the Grand Cross of the Zähringer Order of Lions.

In 1899, a year before the introduction of the Civil Code, Schneider retired. In the same year he received the golden chain for the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion as a special recognition of his services to the administration of justice and the administration of justice. At the same time, the law faculty of Heidelberg University awarded him an honorary doctorate .

He died on November 3, 1911, at the age of 88 in Karlsruhe.

Marriage and offspring

Richard Schneider married Luiga in Offenbach in 1848, a born hunter. His wife died in 1894. The couple's only child, daughter Emilie Sophie Katharina, was born in 1854.
