Peter Neumann (materials scientist)
Peter Neumann (born May 21, 1939 in Ratibor ) is a German physicist and materials scientist .
Life
As a member of the German National Academic Foundation (1958–1966), Peter Neumann studied physics from 1958 to 1963 at the University of Göttingen . In the Institute for Metal Physics there under Peter Haasen , he completed his dissertation with the title Formation and propagation of cracks in the case of alternating deformation , with which he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate . With the so-called strain bursts (expansion maxima) discovered in this work during cyclical deformation, Neumann immediately became internationally known.
Neumann then worked as a postdoc at the Göttingen Institute for Metal Physics, before doing research as a visiting scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois , from 1970–1972 . Back in Germany, he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf from 1972 to 1978 and set up a working group to investigate the alternating deformation and crack formation mechanisms in metals and alloys . In 1974 he completed his habilitation in metal physics at the University of Göttingen .
In 1978 Neumann became a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and head of the Department of Physical Metallurgy at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf. In 1980 he became director of the institute and in 1987 managing director. In 1989 he became a member of the board of the VDEh . In 1990 after the retirement of the institute director Hans-Jürgen Engell , Neumann succeeded him as managing director of the iron research institute. In 2001 he introduced the collegial institute management of the directors at the institute with him as chairman of the management and from 2002 as deputy chairman. In 2004 he retired .
Neumann taught as an adjunct professor 1979–1984 at the University of Göttingen and 1984–2004 at the University of Düsseldorf .
