Peter Crane

Sir Peter Robert Crane (born July 18, 1954 in Kettering (Northamptonshire) ) is a British botanist and paleontologist . From 1999 to 2006 he was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew .

Life

Crane graduated from the University of Reading , where he was a faculty member from 1978 to 1981. In 1981/82 he was a post-doctoral student at Indiana University . From 1982 he was assistant curator in the geology department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. From 1992 to 1999 he was Vice President and then Director and had overall responsibility for the scientific program. After serving as director at Kew , he returned to the University of Chicago as a professor in 2006 . From 2009 he is Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University . He was visiting professor at the University of Zurich , the University of Vienna , the University of Massachusetts and the University of Texas . He was visiting scholar at the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History .

Crane is concerned with macroevolution (evolutionary pattern) of both fossil and recent plants. He is also committed to maintaining biodiversity.

In 2004 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (1998), on whose council he is, and an external member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Sciences (2001) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2008) and a member of the Leopoldina . In 1993 he received the Charles Schuchert Award and in 1984 the Bicentennary Medal of the Linnean Society . He received the Henry Allan Gleason Award from the New York Botanical Garden in 1998 , the Hutchinson Medal from the Chicago Botanic Garden in 2001 and the International Biology Prize in 2014 . From 1998 to 2000 he was President of the Paleontological Society . He is an honorary member of the Palaeontological Association .

In 1999 he directed the scientific program of the International Congress of Botanists in St. Louis. He serves on the boards of the Global Crop Diversity Trust , the Missouri Botanical Garden , the Chicago Botanic Garden, the University of Texas Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.
