Peter Rudolf Scholz (born January 3, 1952 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a former German diplomat . He was last German ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic from 2015 to 2017 .

Life

After studying human medicine , geography and oriental studies at the universities of Munich , Mainz , Lübeck and Hamburg , which he completed with a doctorate as Dr. med. graduated from the University of Mainz (1980), he worked for a year as an emergency doctor in Lübeck and as a country doctor in Wetzlar . After joining the Foreign Service in 1981 and a two-year training at the Diplomatic Academy, he was employed in the Foreign Office (Department for Protocol and State Visits), at the Embassy in Argentina , at the Embassy in Ecuador and at the Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro .

From 1987 to 1990 Peter Scholz was Chargé d' Affaires and Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Mozambique . After working as a personnel officer for the higher service in the Foreign Office, he completed a security policy course at the NATO Defense College in Rome in 1993 . Then Scholz was Deputy Head of the Department for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament in the Foreign Office in Bonn until 1997. He then became Head of the Political Unit and Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to South Africa .

From 2000 to 2001 he was head of the department for West Africa , Sahel and Horn of Africa in the Foreign Office in Berlin. After that he was head of the Southern Africa and Fundamental Issues Africa Department at the Berlin Foreign Office until 2003. At the same time he was head of the “ G8 Africa” work unit of the Federal Chancellor . From 2003 to 2006 Scholz was ministerial director and representative for Latin American policy at the Berlin Foreign Office. From 2006 to 2008 he was ambassador to Chile .

From mid-2008 to the end of 2009 he completed a Finnish language course. At the beginning of 2010 he took over the position of German Ambassador to Finland , which he handed over to Thomas Götz in 2011 . From October 2011 to May 2012 he was briefly Head of Department 3 in the Foreign Office, then for a few months head of the Foreign Policy Department in the Office of the Federal President.

From 2013 to 2015 he was ambassador to Cuba . As the highlight of his two-year career, Peter Scholz succeeded - due to his good relations with German business - that the United Buddy Bears exhibition, which brings people together, not only stopped in Helsinki during his term in office in Finland , but also as "Germany's Ambassador of Peace" Spring 2015 was also a guest in the Cuban capital Havana .

From 2015 until his retirement in 2017, Peter Scholz was the German ambassador in Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan.

In addition to English and French, Scholz also speaks Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
