Peter Spälti

Peter Spälti (born October 12, 1930 in Winterthur ; † December 9, 2010 in Hettlingen ; resident in Netstal and Hettlingen) was a Swiss manager , handball player and politician ( FDP ).

Professional Activities

After completing his law studies at the University of Zurich as Dr. jur. Various legal activities followed in Switzerland and abroad. From 1978 to 1983 Spälti was general director and member of the executive board of the Winterthur Group (today AXA Winterthur ), from 1983 to 1989 CEO and member of the board of directors and from 1989 to 1997, finally, chairman and CEO. From 1997 to 2001 Spälti was Chairman of the Board of Directors and from 2001 Honorary Chairman of the Winterthur Group.

Long-term member of the board of the Swiss Trade and Industry Association (today Economiesuisse ).

Most important board memberships

Until May 26, 2000, Spälti was 1st Vice President of the Credit Suisse Group . From 1991 to 2000 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Rieter Holding AG in Winterthur. Until April 28, 2000 he was a member of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank in Bern. From 1982 to 2001 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Sulzer AG , 17 years of which as its Vice Chairman. In 1971 he was elected to the board of directors of Corti AG and was its vice-chairman for 30 years until 2001.

Sports

Spälti was the goalkeeper of the handball club Pfadi Winterthur in 1950 . At times he was also in the goal of the national handball team. Spälti later remained a sponsor of Pfadi Winterthur and was an enthusiastic fan. In July 2007 he was made an honorary member of the association.

military

After serving in the troops and staff (General Staff Officer) he was Colonel Chief of Staff of a border brigade and then until the end of 1982 commander of the 31st Infantry Regiment. From 1983 to 1990 Spälti was a General Staff Officer in the Army Staff. He has written numerous articles on issues relating to the Swiss army and the economy.

Private

Spälti married in 1959, was widowed from 2007, had a son, two daughters and several grandchildren. After falling ill with a form of ALS in 2002 , Spälti had to withdraw more and more from public life . He died on December 9, 2010 at the age of 80 in his house in Hettlingen.
He was the son of Richard (* 1898; † 1982) and Astra Spälti (born noble daughter von Meiss ) (* 1904; † 1981).
