Peter Strieder (art historian)

Peter Strieder (born July 4, 1913 in Leipzig ; † June 25, 2013 in Nuremberg ) was a German art historian who did research in particular on German panel painting of the late Middle Ages.

biography

Peter Strieder is the son of the economic historian Jakob Strieder . In 1920 his parents moved with him to Munich, where he graduated from the Maximiliansgymnasium in 1932 .

From 1932 to 1937 he studied in Munich and Frankfurt a. M. the subjects art history (with Wilhelm Pinder , then with Hans Jantzen ), classical archeology (with Ernst Langlotz and Ernst Buschor ) and historical auxiliary sciences (with Johannes Heckel ). In 1937 he received his doctorate in Munich with Hans Jantzen on the subject of the people on German panel paintings from the late Middle Ages . From 1937 to 1939 he was a volunteer at the following institutions in Munich: State Collection of Graphics , Bavarian State Painting Collections , and Bavarian National Museum . 1939–1940 he worked as a scholarship holder at the Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation in Stuttgart. From May 1940 to September 1945 he was in military service (including 3 years in Burgundy ) and in captivity.

In November 1945 he became a curator at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . In October 1949 he moved to the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . From 1953 to 1978 he was the chief museum director of the department for painting until 1800. He played a significant role in the reconstruction and redesign of the museum buildings.

Strieder lived with his wife Ruth Strieder in Nuremberg-Reichelsdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Her son is the politician Peter Strieder .

Since his student days, Strieder was an active member of the Catholic student association KSSt.V. Alemannia Munich in the KV .
