The Church of St. Georg is the Roman Catholic parish church of the municipality of Kainach near Voitsberg in Styria . Its history goes back to the middle of the 13th century.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1245 and was incorporated into St. Lambrecht's monastery until 1786 . After 1422 the old church was supposedly replaced by a new building. For a long time it was assumed that today's church tower was built between 1504 and 1587. However, the discovery of older parts of the building suggests that it was probably restored at that time and the entire church was rebuilt and expanded, not rebuilt. A church fire is mentioned in a visitation protocol from 1544. The current church was built between 1722 and 1725 on the site of the previous building, incorporating parts of the old church, whereby the old church tower was retained. On May 29, 1729, the newly built church was consecrated by the Seckau prince-bishop Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn .

In the years 1849/50, 1890 and 1967 restoration work took place in the interior and in 1974/75 on the exterior facades. Since 1973 the parish church has been looked after by two Sisters of the Cross . During a major interior restoration in 2004, plaster remnants from the Romanesque and Gothic periods were found in the church tower .

description

The church is a gallery pillar church . In the west of the church building is the mighty late Gothic church tower with an eight-sided pointed helmet . The pointed helmet dates from 1846 and 1895. On the south side of the tower there are two painted coats of arms, one of which is the house symbol of a Ruep. Nutpaum wears. In the niche of the tower there is a statue of St. John Nepomuk from the end of the 19th century, which was brought here in 1975 from the convent of the Graz Sisters of the Cross . The outside of the tower has painted window frames and corner pilasters .

The three-aisled and five-bay nave , divided by pillars with belt arches , is spanned by a cross vault. The single-bay choir merges seamlessly into the nave and has a three-eighth closure. It also has a cross vault. In the western part of the nave there is a walled gallery , which is supported by a barrel vault . At the base of the vault there is an inserted wooden gallery from the third quarter of the 18th century. The reliefs on the gallery parapet show a double-headed eagle , Saints Florian and Johannes Nepomuk, the Archangel Michael and a guardian angel . Galleries also run along the side aisles. A side chapel is attached to the east yoke of the nave in the south and the sacristy in the north . This creates a cross-shaped floor plan for the church building.

The high altar was erected at the beginning of the 18th century, the altarpiece with statues by Balthasar Prandtstätter in the second quarter of the 18th century. The altarpiece shows St. George . The side altars and the cross altar in the side chapel with a larger than life crucifix were built after 1750. The baroque designed Tabernacle probably dates from the 19th century and carries a statue of St. Rosalia from the first half of the 18th century. The people's altar and the ambo were made in 2004 by Gustav Troger from Kainach marble and sandstone from the Sunfixl cave on Hemmerberg . The pulpit dates from the same time as the side altars (after 1750), while the organ front was made by Andreas Schwarz in 1721. The prospectus was in the parish church of Köflach until 1883 , and the organ work was rebuilt in 1949. The font dates from 1623. There are two glass chandeliers in the church, one of which can be dated to 1853. The baroque stations of the cross are partially painted over. There are also oval images of the apostles from the first half of the 18th century in the church.
