The parish church of St. Gallus is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of St. Gallenkirch in Montafon .

The late Gothic-Baroque parish church stands along the street in the center of the village. It is surrounded by a cemetery to the south.

history

Initially a branch of the Laurentius Church in Bludenz , a chapel and chaplaincy stood at this location in 1307 , which was elevated to an independent parish church in 1474 with the construction of a church in 1483. In 1669 the church was expanded and the tower was rebuilt. The church was structurally changed from 1780 to 1790. The church was restored in 1968/69.

architecture

Indulgence cross

The parish church has a nave under a gable roof and a lower, recessed choir . The north tower is attached to the transition between the nave and the choir. The west facade has a sign with a flat roof. The facades are without a three-dimensional structure, in the south of the nave is a round arched portal with a valley. The tower has two octagonal upper floors with narrow arched sound windows and an onion dome . It resembles the tower of the Laurentius Church in Bludenz. On the north wall is an indulgence cross, marked MHVT 1769, for an indulgence from Pope Benedict in 1754.

The four-bay nave has a stitch cap vault on wide pillars with pilasters on high plinths. The flat arched windows are decorated with stucco rouges and flower garlands. The west gallery stands on two pillars. The retracted choir arch is provided with volutes and C-curlicues on pillars and has a stucco-framed clock at the top. The two-bay choir with three-eighths closure and a stitch cap vault has pointed arched windows and wall pilasters with bandwork decoration in the recessed areas.

Furnishing

The baroque ceiling paintings were created in 1774 by the painter Christoph Klausner from the area around Kufstein under the pastor Christian Lentsch, in the choir : the adoration of the Eucharist, Abraham and Isaac on the left, Mary with child and angel on the right, the heart of Jesus in front, the scales of justice in the back , in the nave : the adoration of the kings, Esther before Ahasver, Judith and Holofernes, King David, and scenes from the Old Testament as models for Christ and Mary. As the donor of the frescoes, Jos. Bargehr called Müller.

During the restoration of the parish church in 1996, remarkable Gothic frescoes (approx. 1500) were uncovered in the vaults .

  • Original sin in paradise
Loss of supernatural friendship with God
  • God hands over the animal world to man
  • Expulsion of the first parents from paradise
God drives out the clothed first parents and grants them natural providence
  • Adoration of the Magi
  • Mary Visitation
  • Baptism of Jesus at the Jordan by John the Baptist

The glass painting was created by the Tyrolean Glasmalereianstalt in 1898, with Antonius on the left in the choir, Francis on the right, and the Holy Family in the nave.

The high altar and side altars were consecrated in 1786. The high altar with four columns on a curved floor plan shows Saint Gallus as an altarpiece . In the presence of an Alemannic prince, he throws an idol statue into Lake Constance. The picture was painted by Franz Bertle in 1862 and is on the right wall of the presbytery during the Easter festival. The east window uncovered in 1996 shows the vine of Christ under the sun of the Holy Spirit. The upper picture from 1862 shows God the Father. The figures show Augustine on the left and Ambrosius on the right. The new tabernacle with crucifix is from the 20th century. The high altar was supplemented with confessionals around 1785 and provided with depictions of a bronze snake, the golden calf and the tablets of the law . The confessionals show rich rococo jewelry. The inscriptions refer to the brazen serpent: I am bitten, here you will be cured and to the golden calf with the commandments of God: I am wrong, come here you will be helped . The left side altar bears the figure of St. Josef, the right side altar the figure of the Rosary Madonna, both by Franz Burger. Both side altars have an attachment crucifix, created by Josef Anton Stocker around 1900.

the pulpit
The organ was built around 1787

The choir stalls with scales and a blown gable are from 1680. The pulpit, around 1787, shows the marriage of Mary, the Good Shepherd, Christ and Mary, Christ and Magdalena. It is attributed to Josef Anton Renn. On the cover are putti with symbols of the four church fathers and the figure of Moses by Josef Georg Witwer . The painting on the gallery parapet around 1780 shows the 12 apostles. The station of the cross in stucco frame was painted by Wilhelm Mathies in 1914.

The organ with case with rocailles decor and two trumpet angels was built in the 1780s. It was renewed by Pflüger Orgelbau in 2000 and 2001 by installing a completely new organ in the magnificent organ case. On the choir pillar is a coat of arms tombstone for Arco Francisus Lertlin (1655–1739). One bell was cast by Michael Hafner in 1560, and another by Andreas a Porta in 1705. In the vestibule there is a group of figures: a crucifix with Maria and Johannes by the sculptor Johann Ladner around 1770.

Late Gothic sculptures from the parish church, including the figure of the saint Luzius von Chur , patron of the diocese of Chur , are in the Vorarlberg State Museum .

The funeral hall at the cemetery was provided in 1972 by Konrad Honold with concrete glass windows and a mosaic of risen people.
