Phaedra is a 1962 film drama that was created in US-French-Greek co-production. The screenplay is based on the tragedy The Wreathed Hippolytos by the Greek poet Euripides .
action
Thanos Kyrilis is a powerful Greek shipowner. He is married to Phaedra in his second marriage, and from his first marriage he has a now 24-year-old son, Alexis, who currently lives in London. Thanos sends his wife to London to get her stepson to spend the summer in Greece.
The young man and the older woman are drawn to each other. They start a secret love affair. At home on Hydra Island , however, Alexis feels guilty. Thanos is happy that his son has returned. He wants to get him into the shipping business. He is also planning a wedding for Alexis with the daughter of another shipowner, with whom he wants to merge. Phaedra is jealous and doesn't want to give up on Alexis. She confronts Thanos with her affair, who then furiously condemns his wife and beats his son.
Alexis wants to leave the house. Phaedra asks him to take her with her, but he refuses. He gets into his car and drives along the coastal road. He commits suicide by driving his car over the cliff. Phaedra goes into her room and overdose on sleeping pills.
Reviews
The lexicon of the international film about the film: "In addition to some original ideas, there are also embarrassingly kitschy scenes."
The "TV Guide" finds that the film suffers from the many symbolizations and the harsh direction by Dassin. The camera work, however, is praised, especially the fact that the film was shot in black and white and thus the gloomy atmosphere is not ruined.
The "TimeOut Filmguide" describes the film as "poorly conceived" . The main problem is that the transfer from ancient tragedy to modern film does not work. The poetry, the dramatic single-mindedness of the original and psychological insights have been lost. On the other hand, the horror about the inbreeding case with the stepson only seems inflated.
Awards
1963 was Theoni V. Aldredge in the category Best Costume Design (b / w) nominated for an Oscar. Melina Mercouri was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category for Best Actress (Drama) and was nominated for the British Film Academy Award in the category Best Foreign Actress . The film was also nominated for Best Picture .
background
The film was first released in Germany on September 7, 1962.
The film was shot on the Greek island of Hydra, in Piraeus and on the coastal road to Cape Sounion (Alexis suicide scene).
After director Jules Dassin had to leave Hollywood in 1953 - he was on the HUAC "black list" - he moved to France, where he was successful on a small budget. There he also met the Greek actress Melina Mercouri. With her he shot the festival success on Sunday in 1960 ... never! . Since the anti-communist McCarthy era had ended in the USA, Dassin was able to gain a foothold again in the USA. He made five more films with Melina Mercouri, who became his wife in 1966, in which, as in Phaedra , he appeared as an actor himself.
Anthony Perkins had become a star with his role as Norman Bates in the Hitchcock classic Psycho . In order to avoid a role cliché, Perkins went to Europe. Phaedra was his second European film work.
