Theoni Vahliotou Aldredge , actually Theoni Athanasiou Vahliotou , (born August 22, 1922 in Thessaloniki , Greece , † January 21, 2011 in Stamford , Connecticut ) was an American costume designer from Greece who , in addition to an Oscar for best costume design, won several times Tony Award for Best Costume for Best Costume Design and other film awards .

Life

Theoni Athanasiou Vahliotou, daughter of a doctor general of the Greek armed forces and later member of the Greek parliament , attended the American school in Athens and after graduating in 1949 studied at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago . In 1953 she married the actor Tom Aldredge and was married to him until her death.

She began her career as a costume designer in the film industry in 1955 with the film Stella (1955) and worked on the costume design of over fifty films. In addition, she began on March 10, 1959 at the world premiere of Theoni V. Aldredge in the Martin Beck Theater after the play by Tennessee Williams , directed by Elia Kazan with Paul Newman and Geraldine Page also as a costume designer for performances at theaters on Broadway .

At the 1961 Academy Awards was nominated for the first time for the Oscar for best costume design in a black and white film, for Sunday ... never! (1960) by and with Jules Dassin as well as Melina Mercouri and Giorgos Fountas . In 1961 she was also nominated for a Tony Award for the best costumes for The Devil's Advocate for the first time .

She received another nomination for an Oscar for best costume design in a black and white film in 1963 for Phaedra (1962) by Jules Dassin with Melina Mercouri, Anthony Perkins and Raf Vallone . She received further nominations for the Tony Award for the best costumes in 1972 for Two Gentlemen from Verona , 1973 for Much Ado About Nothing and 1974 for The Au Pair Man .

At the 1975 Academy Awards she won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in The Great Gatsby (1974) by Jack Clayton, starring Robert Redford , Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern . For this she also won the British Academy Film Award in 1975 for the best costumes (BAFTA Film Award).

In 1976 she was nominated again for a Tony Award for the best costumes in the world premiere of the musical A Chorus Line , before she received her first Tony Award in 1977 for the musical Annie . At the same time, she was nominated in 1977 for the Tony Award for the best costumes of performances of The Threepenny Opera .

In 1979 she won the Saturn Award for best costume in The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) by Irvin Kershner with Faye Dunaway , Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Dourif , and was for another Tony Award for best costumes in Ballroom nominated. In 1980 she won the Tony Award for the best costumes in the musical Barnum for the second time , and was then nominated in 1981 for the world premiere of the musical 42nd Street and in 1982 for Dreamgirls for the Tony Award in this category.

For the television film Alice at the Palace (1982) by Emile Ardolino with Meryl Streep , Betty Aberlin and Debbie Allen , produced by NBC , Theoni V. Aldredge was nominated for the 1982 Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievements in Children's Programs. In 1984 she won her third and final Tony Award for best costumes in the widely acclaimed Broadway performances of the musical La Cage aux Folles . For the first part of the NBC-produced television series Nutcracker: Money, Madness & Murder (1987) by Paul Bogart , starring Lee Remick , Tate Donovan and John Glover , she received an Emmy nomination in 1987 for outstanding costume design in a television series.

In 1986 she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame .

She received further nominations for the Tony Award for the best costumes in 1990 for the musical Gypsy and in 1991 for The Secret Garden and in 1994 for the Saturn Award for the best costumes in The Addams Family in Crazy Tradition (1993) by Barry Sonnenfeld with Anjelica Huston , Raúl Juliá and Christopher Lloyd .

Most recently, Theoni V. Aldredge, who was awarded the Career Achievement Award of the Costume Designers Guild (CDG) in 2000 , was nominated in 2001 for another Tony Award for the best costumes in Follies .
