Philip Kotler (born May 27, 1931 in Chicago ) is an American economist and professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University . He is considered to be the founder of modern marketing theory and his book Marketing Management , published in 1967, is standard literature in university education.

biography

Philip Kotler was born the son of Russian-Ukrainian immigrants. He is married and has three daughters.

He studied economics at the University of Chicago under the renowned economist Milton Friedman and completed his studies with a master's degree . He then received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. Degree under Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Samuelson.

This was followed by stays as a Post Doctoral Fellow to study mathematics at Harvard University and to study social science at the University of Chicago.

In the field of marketing, Kotler has made a name for himself as a leading authority worldwide. He was on the board of directors of the College of Marketing at the Institute of Management Science (TIMS), was director of the American Marketing Association , advisory board of the Marketing Science Institute and was director of "The MAC-Group".

Since 1962 he has been teaching as a "Professor of International Marketing" at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois) .

In addition to his work as a lecturer and publicist, Philip Kotler works in the Kotler Marketing Group (KMG). KMG is a global marketing consulting company.

Importance in Marketing

When Kotler started into marketing, it was mostly focused on sales, advertising and retail. With a restructuring of marketing he wanted to make this subject more scientific and decision-oriented.

He built his marketing textbook "Marketing Management", published in 1967, on the foundations of mathematics , economics , social science and organizational theory . "Marketing Management", which is now in its 15th edition, is one of the main marketing works in university marketing education, has been translated into more than 25 languages ​​and is listed by the Financial Times as one of the 50 most important business books of all time.

A number of books were published in which he applied his marketing concepts in the areas of art, fundraising, religion and specifically geographic regions. This was followed by the expansion of these concepts to include governments and non-profit organizations in order to consider and shape the needs of future generations.
