Philip M. Jefferies
Philip M. Jefferies (born May 31, 1925 in Pennsylvania , † April 6, 1987 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American art director and production designer .
Life
Philip M. Jefferies' career began around 1954 as an illustrator for Warner Bros. It lasted until around 1986. From 1962 he worked as a set designer and art director. His last work was the television film Local 323 . His best-known work is probably his work as art director on the film Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid (1969), in which he and his team built a ghost town near Hurricane into a film town. The set, especially the hut, remained for years and was visited by tourists.
For his work on Tom Sawyer's adventure , he and Robert De Vestel were nominated for an Oscar for Best Production Design at the 1974 Academy Awards. However, Henry Bumstead and James W. Payne won the award for their work on The Clou .
His 3,350 artworks are now part of the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
Private life
His brothers Walter M. Jefferies (1921–2003) and John D. Jefferies Sr. (1936–2010) were also active in production design . At the request of Walter M. Jefferies, they worked together on the pilot for the series Raumschiff Enterprise , but only Walter M. Jefferies was named in the credits. While Walter M. Jefferies stayed with it, Philip returned to his own film projects.
