Physalis coztomatl is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Physalis coztomatl are perennial , shrubby or herbaceous, semi- shrubby plants that can reach a height of up to 2 m. They grow upright and branch out just above the ground. The entire plant is hairy with simple trichomes , rarely including glandular trichomes, the glandular tip of which is coffee-colored. The stem is smooth, cylindrical, and often curved horizontally in the upper part of the plant.
The leaves are alternate or in pairs, the leaf blade has a length of 5.7 to 19 cm and a width of 3.9 to 17 cm. The shape of the leaf blade is ovate to almost spherical ovoid, the tip is pointed, the base is conical, cut off to almost heart-shaped. The leaf margin is full-margined or has a few (even only one) teeth, rarely also sawtooth-like, then the teeth are very conspicuous and pointed. The petiole has a length of 1.4 to 6.5 cm.

The flowers are single. The buds are egg-shaped, pointed and up to 12 mm long. At the time of flowering, the flower stalk is 14 to 28 mm long. The calyx is large and wide, 11 to 15 mm long and 9 to 11 mm wide at the base of the calyx lobes. In addition, the calyx is divided into lanceolate, egg-shaped, pointed to awl-shaped, 8 to 13 mm long calyx tips. The 1.5 to 2.4 cm long and 2.8 to 4 cm diameter crown is yellow, bell-shaped, wheel-shaped to elongated, the edge is covered with trichomes. The markings in the crown are about 6 mm long, compound, coffee-colored, reddish or purple in color. The stamens consist of 4 to 7 mm long, purple colored stamens and 3 to 5 mm long, purple colored anthers . The stylus is 8 to 11 mm long, the stigma is club-shaped and almost head-shaped.

As the fruit ripens, the calyx enlarges to a length of 4 to 5.7 cm and a width of 2.8 to 3.4 cm. The calyx is hairy and membranous. It has ten ribs in cross-section, with five ribs clearly defined. The individual calyx lobes are lanceolate, egg-shaped, tapered to awl-shaped and 1.2 to 2.2 cm long. The fruit stalk has a length of 1.8 to 4 cm. The fruit is a berry with a diameter of 1.5 cm.
Phenology
Both flowers and fruits are formed throughout the year.
Occurrence and locations
The species occurs in many parts of Mexico before, the distribution area is located in the states of Distrito Federal , México , Guerrero , Hidalgo , Jalisco , Michoacan , Morelos , Nayarit , Oaxaca , Puebla , Querétaro and Veracruz .
The locations are at altitudes between 2300 and 3100 m in temperate mixed pine and oak forests or in moderately warm mountain areas.
Systematics
The species Physalis coztomatl is classified within the genus of the bladder cherries ( Physalis ) in the section Coztomatae of the subgenus Rydbergis . The species is similar to Physalis lassa . They resemble each other mainly through the thick hair, the ten-ribbed fruit cup and the crown with dark markings. The species can be distinguished by the different sizes of the calyx on the flower, the flower stalks and the overall size of the plants. In addition, the main distribution area of Physalis lassa is more in the southeast of Mexico.
