Pietro de Magistris (also Peter di Magister; † before September 18, 1628 in Kaisersteinbruch , then western Hungary , today Burgenland ) was an Italian master stonemason of the Renaissance . He was a court stone mason under the emperors Matthias and Ferdinand II.

Life

Entry in the land register 1603

On March 13th, 1603 his name is mentioned for the first time in the imperial quarry: "... Steinmetz am Leithaberg has the use and guarantee of a dwelling there, including a gardener ..."

Independent stonemasonry in 1617

The stonemason trade in Kaisersteinbruch belonged to the main hut Wiener Neustadt , whose trade regulations regulated all guild customs such as work clothes , assignment, acquittal , etc. In 1617 , together with Baden , the status of an independent quarter store was granted. The name of Pietro de Magistris is recorded in this first master book.

Imperial master stonemason

In 1618 the Lower Austrian government demanded the collection of the wine tax , the "Täz", and sent their rent master Johann Miller to the quarry so that he could find out whether it belonged to the state under the law. His report of February 20, 1618 also shows the beginnings of this quarter drawer of the stonemasonry (excerpt):

“… Is subject to Hungarian jurisdiction
There are six masters, stonemasons and a sculptor resident , and all the servants who are in the quarry live from the work with these six masters. Ulrich Payos , Pietro de Magistris, Leonhardt Holzäpfl , Nicolae di Novo, Andre Ruffini and Antonius Bregno . They are all Swiss , including four Masters of Her Imperial Majesty. In the event Her Majesty need them, you owe them to put all other work aside and to get Her Majesty's things done. How they now lead a main gate on Ebersdorf ... "

Land register 1619

On April 30, 1619, he and his wife Juliana leased a plot of land next to the stone crusher Hans Hinterlang. He had married Juliana NN, probably not her first marriage. There are no further documents for this.

Excerpt from the text: "... previously full of perennials , which were mowed for lime and cabbage burning, a herb garden will be created between the barren monastery and the quarry".
