Andre Ruffini (also called Roffin, Rofin, * 1590 in the Como district , Lombardy , Italy ; † September 1648 in Kaisersteinbruch , Hungary , now Burgenland ) was an Italian master stonemason and sculptor of the Renaissance and the first judge in the quarry.

family

The bricklayer Moritz von Rofin, a Welsch immigrant, acquired a corner house in Wiener Neustadt in 1539 in the Frauenviertel. On the same day, Rofin buys a farmstead in Ungargasse. Moritz died in 1546. Maybe a relative.

Life

The stonemason trade in Kaisersteinbruch belonged to the main Wiener Neustadt smelter , whose trade regulations governed all guild customs such as work clothes , assignment, acquittal , etc. In 1617 , together with Baden , the status of an independent quarter store was given. In this first master book , the name of Andre Ruffini is recorded alongside Antonius Crivelli , Ulrich Payos , Leonhardt Holzapfel , Pietro de Magistris , Nicola de Novo and Antonius Bregno . The function of the Zechmeister was changed annually, 1626 Master Andre is documented.

Foundation of the Kaisersteinbruch Church

Margaretha Ruffinin, first founder of the church

Abbot Christoph Schaffer from Heiligenkreuz Abbey and authority in Holy Cross Quarry logged 1653, "anno 1617 lived an old woman in the quarry, Margaretha Ruffinin which with the intention that a chapel or Kirchel should begin to build, donated ten buckets of wine." Margaretha was the wife of master stonemason Andre Ruffini, born Wildtmann, her brother Steffan Wildtmann was the landlord of St. Johannes near Altenburg.

On February 20, 1618, the rent master Johann Miller reported to the Lower Austrian provincial government, which energetically demanded the collection of the wine tax (Täz), from the quarry of five stonemasons and a sculptor , all of Welsche , including four masters from Ihro Kayserlichen Majesty , one of them Andre Ruffini .

A contract for the construction of the church with the signature and seal of the master stonemasons Andre Ruffini, Ulrich Payos and the master bricklayer Steffan Friedrich was concluded on November 21, 1618.

Ruffini - Maderno

From the documents it can be seen that Judge Ruffini became more and more the executive body of the rule, got into open confrontation with the fellow masters. Mr. Abbot has nothing to do with them in court cases, they demand the right to serve wine and also to run the meat bank themselves. There were problems with the financing of the new church building, especially inconsistencies in the billing bills that Ruffini kept. In 1644, the Wiener Bauhütte of the Kaisersteinbruch Brotherhood threatened to take drastic measures in their work in Vienna if they did not finally move away from Wiener Neustadt and incorporate Vienna. In all of these controversial issues, Master Pietro Maino Maderno emerged as the opposite pole.

Death 1648

Master Andre died in September 1648. The epitaph , privately owned, is partly heavily ceded, the text reads:

HIE LIGT BURIED THE HONORABLE / AND ORPHAN MASTER ANDRAE / RUFFIN GEWESTER RICHTER ALLHIE / IN STAINBRUCHER WHICH .. THIS GOTSHAUS / S.ROCHI AND SEBASTIANI .. / AVOID HIS AGE 58 YEAR / GOD MARRY HIM / GOD SEASON / REASONING. AMEN.

The widow Agatha married in 1649 to Brucker citizen Johann Selinger. After his death Georg Strasser, a citizen of Baden, sold the house including the quarry and several gardens to the Viennese master stonemason Hans Herstorffer on July 24, 1651 .
