Location of Planig in Rhineland-Palatinate |
Planig is a district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969 the place was an independent municipality.
location
Planig is located on the eastern edge of Bad Kreuznach, on the lower reaches of the Appelbach in front of the Rheinhessen hill country . There are arable land around the place and vineyards on the hills in the southeast. In the west towards the city center of Bad Kreuznach there is an industrial park.
history
In prehistoric times, the settlement was on the Kreuznach-Bingen road that ran parallel to the Nahe . Pottery fragments from ceramic vessels with incised patterns have been found since the early Stone Age, and there are fragments of everyday objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages. From the Roman period from the 1st century AD, remains of graves and walls as well as coins were found. From the early Franconian period (beginning of the 6th century), the Prince's grave of Planig was discovered in 1939 . In addition to a gold-plated spangenhelm , there was a rich set of weapons with a shield, lance, battle ax, javelin and sword. The grave goods are exhibited in the Landesmuseum Mainz .
In 983, the Frankish Emperor Otto II gave the region on the Rhine and the lower Nahe to Archbishop Willigis of Mainz , who was also Arch Chancellor of the Empire ( Veronese donation ). In 1092 Archbishop Ruthard handed over the sovereignty of Planig to his cathedral chapter. The deed of donation from 1092 is the oldest written mention of the village.
In 1294 Archbishop Gerhard transferred the right to fill the pastoral position in Planig and the income from the parish to the St. Jakob monastery in Mainz . The sovereignty over the place also shifted over time from the cathedral chapter to the monastery. The abbey owned it for nearly 500 years until 1791. She passed on armed protection and jurisdiction to various princes as fiefs . From 1465 to 1654, the princes of Löwenstein zu Randeck held the fief for the longest time. In 1567 they introduced the Reformation.
A large plague epidemic that spread from the Lower Rhine reached Planig in 1666. About half of the 250 residents died. The procession on Ascension Day, which still takes place in Planig today, goes back to a vow made by those who survived at the time.
The place developed in the Middle Ages around today's Evangelical Resurrection Church. The originally Romanesque building dates from the 12th century, from which the lower part of the church tower is still preserved. In 1492 the nave and 1507 of the choir were rebuilt or rebuilt in the Gothic style. Since the Reformation in the 16th century there have been repeated disputes between denominations about the use of the church. This only subsided in 1899 with the construction of the new Catholic parish church of St. Gordianus . It was built in the neo-Romanesque style according to the plans of the Mainz church builder Ludwig Becker and consecrated in 1901.
In 1798 as a result of the first coalition war , the region up to the Rhine came to France as the Département du Mont-Tonnerre . When the French rule was liberated in 1816, Planig became part of the Rheinhessen province in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . After the First World War, the place was an independent municipality in the Alzey district , from 1938 in the Bingen district until it became a district of Bad Kreuznach in 1969.
