occupation

Plug & Pray - From computers and other people is a documentary by Jens Schanze about the possibilities and consequences of computer technology and artificial intelligence . The title (literally about “plug in and pray”) is a widespread corruption of the term “ plug and play ” introduced by Microsoft for the hot swapping of devices .

action

The film deals with a dream of mankind: the construction of intelligent machines . Leading scientists in the USA, Japan, Italy and Germany provide insights into their projects, their motivation and their visions for the future. They explain what tasks computer-controlled machines and robots should take on in people's daily lives in the future. One of the pioneers of computer development, former MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum , born in Berlin in 1923 , also known for the development of ELIZA , comments on the future visions of his colleagues formulated in the film from a humanistic point of view.

background

The film was produced in cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk between 2006 and 2009. The production was funded by the German Film Fund , the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the Bavarian FilmFernsehFonds . The shooting with Joseph Weizenbaum continued until shortly before his death in March 2008.

Since January 2010, the film has been shown at 30 international film festivals , for example in the competition program of the Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels (FIPA) 2010 in Biarritz in the Creative Documentaries category , at the Porto International Film Festival 2010 and at the Festival du Cinema Visions du Réel in Nyon .

The German theatrical release was on November 11, 2010 via farbfilm verleih and distributed by 24 Bilder Filmagentur .

review

“A great look at the promises, problems, and ethical aspects of robotics. A wonderful conversation piece and a refreshingly open and unbiased view of scientists debating and doing their work. "

- Variety (translation from English)

“Beyond this cultural studies reading, 'Plug & Pray' remains a very conventional documentation that does not develop any independent theses. The material shown is extensive, but this pluralism tends to get in the way of an escalation beyond the Kurzweil / Weizenbaum dialectic. "

“The number of science fiction films in which the existence or the artificial creation of human-like creatures, intelligent machines or even humans is discussed has now reached enormous proportions. What director and Grimme Prize winner Jens Schanze brought us to the cinemas with his documentary 'Plug & Pray', however, goes closer than any fictional examination of the subject and is, surprisingly, more critical than Hollywood ever was or could be.
