Plunkett & Macleane is an American - Czech adventure film directed by Jake Scott from 1999 .

action

The film is set in England in the 18th century . The mugger Will Plunkett and his partner rob a carriage when the two are surprised by the police. Plunkett's partner swallows a stolen gem, but is shot by the police shortly afterwards. While Plunkett is able to escape, his badly injured partner is tortured to death by the brutal police chief Chance.

The incident was observed by the impoverished Captain James Macleane who happened to be at the scene. After the burial of Plunkett's partner, he sneaks into the cemetery to "recover" the gem, where he meets Plunkett who is up to the same thing. After meeting the police again and spending a short time in jail, Plunkett is able to convince Macleane to commit robberies with him. Because of his rank, Macleane has access to aristocratic circles and can thus determine “where to get something”; together they attack worthwhile victims. Because of Macleane's gallant behavior during the raids, the two quickly became known and notorious as "Gentlemen Highwaymen". Chance fails to take it.

Macleane meets Rebecca Gibson at a ball. He falls in love with her and that makes him careless. Rebecca soon finds out who is behind the Gentlemen Highwaymen. When Plunkett loses his knife in a robbery, Chance also reveals their identity and sets a trap for them. Plunkett and Macleane manage to escape, but realize that they have been blown. Plunkett believes Rebecca betrayed her and wants to flee to America; but he finds out that Macleane has spent all of her stolen money. Macleane, on the other hand, believes in Rebecca's innocence and wants to visit her with Plunkett; However, he feels betrayed by Macleane because of the money spent and separates from him.

Macleane then goes to Rebecca alone, but is expected by Chance and arrested. He is quickly sentenced and is supposed to be hanged, but when he is already hanging on the gallows in Tyburn , Plunkett suddenly appears and frees him. The two of them flee from the place of execution together with Rebecca, but are followed by Chance. As they hide in the sewers, Plunkett falls back and kills Chance.

Eventually Plunkett, Macleane and Rebecca emigrate to America.

background

The role models of the two main characters actually lived, but the film does not try to recount both fates in an authentic manner. MacLaine was hanged.
