action
Karl-Heinz and Inge Schreiner find a message from their son Jürgen in their mailbox. In it he writes that he apologizes. Karl-Heinz takes the letter as a sign that Jürgen wants to part with his girlfriend Rica, who is rejected by his parents. Karl-Heinz would have preferred the solid Ilona, daughter of the innkeeper. Karl-Heinz goes to Rica's parents with his motorcycle team and takes some of his son's clothes with him, believing that Jürgen wants to move in again. A little later, the new hall of the building yard, whose manager is Jürgen, is on fire. In the charred remains of the hall, not only Jürgen's keys but also a corpse are found. On the basis of a broken leg in his youth, it can be clearly established that the dead person is Jürgen. For Karl-Heinz it is now certain that his son was murdered.
First Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner is entrusted with the investigation. Again and again he has to stop the careless acting Karl-Heinz. On the day before the fire in the hall, Jürgen had a dispute with bricklayer Artloff, who worked in the building yard. Jürgen had reported Artloff for stealing building materials. Artloff received a suspended sentence. During interrogation, Artloff admits to having set fire to the hall with gasoline. His friend Klaus Munk alerted the fire brigade immediately after the first flames. But Jürgen's body was at the other end of the hall. Investigators soon come to the conclusion that fire and death were two different offenses.
Rica appears in the village. She is looking for Jürgen, who, according to witness statements, drove to her in town the day before. However, Rica did not see Jürgen, even if the doorman of the dormitory where Rica lives confirmed that Jürgen was there. After a short time he ran out of the dormitory. It turns out that Rica cheated on Jürgen with gardener Bodo Macher. Ilona, who was in love with Jürgen herself, knew about Rica's behavior and wrote Jürgen a false telegram inviting him to the dormitory in Rica's name. She hoped to open Jürgen's eyes that way. It turns out that Jürgen came back to the village that night and waited at the train station. Macher arrived in the village two hours later, but said he did not see Jürgen.
Jürgen's mother Inge wants to send the investigators Jürgen's letter, which she found in the mailbox on the day of the fire. Karl-Heinz burns the letter because he wants to prevent his son from being viewed as a suicide. Lieutenant Jürgen Hübner procures Jürgen's diaries and has them analyzed by a psychologist, who also comes to the conclusion that Jürgen may have committed suicide. The realization that his only livelihood, Rica, betrayed him, could have been too much for him. Inge reports the letter to the investigators and the case is clear. Karl-Heinz, however, armed with a rifle, visits Bodo Macher in a greenhouse and threatens him. He wants to blackmail him into confessing that he murdered Jürgen. The investigators shout at him through the window that Jürgen has committed suicide, but Karl-Heinz insists on a confession. ABV Oberleutnant Willi Mertens advises Bodo to confess the act to Karl-Heinz, and Bodo agrees. Only now does Karl-Heinz let him go and Inge approaches her husband soothingly.
