Ten Roses is a TV film from the ARD crime series Polizeiruf 110 . The film was produced by the MDR and was broadcast for the first time on Sunday February 10, 2019 on Das Erste . It is the tenth case for Magdeburg investigator Doreen Brasch and the fifth case with her partner Dirk Köhler .

action

The doctor's assistant in a psychiatric practice, Kim Pohlmann, is found dead in an abandoned backyard in Magdeburg. Since the corpse is symbolically tied on the lower legs, Brasch and Koehler suspect a serial offender, because six years ago the prostitute Jessica Peschke was murdered and her legs were similarly tied. The suspicion therefore falls on the flower seller Pauline Schilling, who at the time was still living as a man and was the main suspect. Since a gender reassignment several years ago, Schilling has been leading the life of a normal woman and has a stable relationship with the Sparkasse employee Sebastian Kwittek. During the interrogation, Schilling states that he does not know the victim Kim Pohlmann, but asks her friend to lie for her and to give her an alibi for the time of the crime. Shortly afterwards, while Köhler Schilling discovers - she knew the victim after all - Jan Freise, with whom Pohlmann had a relationship, is the investigators' target. However, at the time of the murder of Jessica Peschke, he was in psychiatric treatment and thus at least a safe alibi for the first murder.

Shortly before Freise was questioned, Brasch had stepped into Freise's house on a risky solo journey and discovered a large number of psychotropic drugs and a dungeon where Kim Pohlmann might have been. Since they cannot legally use the knowledge gained in this way against Freise, Brasch and Köhler are dependent on an official search of the house, for which, however, they would not receive permission due to the vague evidence. Brasch and Köhler therefore try to entangle Freise in contradictions and to persuade him to make a confession. However, this does not succeed and the investigators continue to step on the spot.

Brasch's mood has been very cold since her superior Uwe Lemp announced that he would like to take up a position at the Aschersleben Police School on time for his 30th anniversary . His predecessor, Ulf Meier, has been familiar with the Schilling / Peschke case for a long time and is also an old friend of Lemps. Brasch went to see him and found out about the circumstances surrounding Schilling's arrest after the murder of Jessica in 2012. At that time, Paul Schilling was about to undergo hormone treatment, which was not approved. He was acted so badly during the interrogations that he confessed. This was declared null and void when Ulf Meier reported the abuse and was henceforth considered to be a “fellow pig”. Transferred to the police school, he is now training young police candidates. While Lemp hopes to find his “lost shadow” again from the change in career, Brasch doubts both her professional-professional relationship with Lemp and the fresh love affair with the psychologist Wilke, who does not tell her about the existence of his little daughter. Köhler also had doubts when he happened to find out about this private relationship and was therefore concerned about Wilke's neutrality. His concern is justified because colleague Brasch still tends to go it alone and shares her knowledge with Koehler only to a limited extent.

While both Brasch and Köhler are convinced of a serial murder, Brasch receives an anonymous tip that leads them back to Pauline Schilling. Almost by chance she found out about a “good spirit” who pretends to make up for a debt from back then. Shortly after the arrest, abuse and release, Pauline Schilling was contacted by a man who had helped her with money and the reference to a psychiatric expert and thus helped her to reassign her sex. Yet she only knows the man's voice. Pauline Schilling explains to Brasch that every year she presents her sponsor and helper with a large bouquet of flowers, which this time was not picked up. The phone number of this stranger also proves to be a dead end. Brasch, however, thinks he is on a hot track. She goes to Ulf Meier again, where she is already expected.

At about the same time, Köhler also came to the realization that the killer only wanted to fake a series with the calf restraints in order not to be suspected of the murder of Jessica Peschke. Horrified by the idea that his friend Ulf Meier could be the wanted perpetrator, Lemp follows with Koehler Brasch. In good time, they thwart Meier's fatal plan, who, after making a confession to Brasch, wants to be shot by her. Brasch denied him this "honorable death" and did not respond to Meier's request. She can even be exchanged for the captured Pauline Schilling, who is wearing an explosive vest, but is ultimately saved by a shot at Meier by Lemps. Brasch was convinced that Meier had not used any real explosives, but that was a mistake and she has to recognize that she had carelessly risked her life.

In the end, Brasch has to admit that - once again - Niklas Wilke's murder theory applies: “Something like love” also caused the lonely Ulf Meier to commit two murders. He wanted to protect both women from themselves and ended up killing them. He had freed Kim Pohlmann from her friend Freise's cellar dungeon. However, after he found her and beat her half to death, Meier wanted to redeem her and suffocated her.

Lemp now has to refrain from his plan to move to Aschersleben because, in his opinion, he can hardly succeed the man he has just shot. Together with Brasch and Koehler, Lemp toasts his rediscovered shadow.

Reviews

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online said: “This 'police call' is the most demanding so far from the long-time hapless TV area in Saxony-Anhalt. Screenwriter Wolfgang Stauch and director Torsten C. Fischer had already set mild innovative accents in the previous episode , here they find a way to bring the transgender topic into the Sunday crime story without an omniscient explanator having to explain the facts to the very stupid . "

At the FAZ , Oliver Junge said: “Ten roses are a commitment, a gift, a revelation of a weakness, but maybe also a thorny means of pressure or the beginning of a dependency. In the present case, ten roses are a kind of boomerang, an offer of friendship that gradually wilts because no one proves himself worthy of him. ”“ A lot happens [in this 'police call'] in a subtly reduced way: with looks, gestures, groping words. There are no know-it-all explanatory monologues, but sometimes perplexity. The protagonists are even relieved of their own mess, the level-headed Köhler the suppressed aggressiveness (it breaks through briefly), the emotionally hardened Brasch the doubts about the reliability of their fellow men. "

Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “'Ten roses' is typical for this row offshoot, where you always had to take a closer look to discover its qualities. Torsten C. Fischer's film does not appeal to the viewer, has no surface sexiness despite its striking color dramaturgy and atmospheric score, but tells an unconventional story with idiosyncratic characters. This narrative dense film is a celebration of psychological nuances and nuances. "

At the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Cornelius Pollmer was of the opinion: “In what world would it be plausible that the police would not discover anything insignificant until the second visit to the manageable crime scene, such as a mattress corner that smelled badly of sexual abuse or a blood-smeared shower? Second, you will never understand that in the narrative structure of the crime film: Does it always have to be so that after the perpetrator question has been resolved, all narrative threads are hastily tied off at the last minute? "
