The Pomata district is located in the Chucuito Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded in 1821. The Pomata district has an area of 401 km² (according to other sources: 382 km²). The 2017 census counted 13,707 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 18,891, in 2007 it was 17,787. The administrative seat of the district is the town of Pomata, 3876 m high on the southwestern shore of Lake Titicaca , with a population of 1,436 (as of 2017). Pomata is about 20 km east-southeast of the provincial capital July and 90 km southeast of the regional capital Puno .
Geographical location
The Pomata district is located in the Altiplano southwest of Lake Titicaca in the central north of the Chucuito province. It has a maximum longitudinal extent in east-west direction of about 25 km. It includes the catchment area of the streams and smaller rivers that flow into the bay east of Pomata. In the west and east of the district rise up to 4800 m high mountains. The national road 3S from Puno via Ilave to Desaguadero leads through the district and past Pomata.
The Pomata district borders in the east on the districts Cuturapi and Yunguyo (both in the province of Yunguyo ), in the southeast on the district Zepita , in the southwest on the district Huacullani and in the west on the district July .
