The Poppenberg near Winterberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis is 745.8 m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the Winterberg highlands in the Rothaar Mountains .
geography
location
The Poppenberg is located in the Hochsauerland within the north-eastern center of the Rothaar Mountains in the Sauerland-Rothaar Mountains Nature Park . Its summit rises about 1 km east-northeast of that of Brembergs (approx. 810 m ), 650 m southwest of that of Herrloh ( 732.9 m ) and 1.5 km west of the center of the Winterberg town center. The Büre rises to the south as a tributary of the Nameless, which flows east of the mountain . A shared section of federal highways 236 and 480 passes to the southeast .
Natural allocation
The Poppenberg is located in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Winterberger Hochland (333.5) just in the natural area Astenberg (333.54) in the southwest opposite the Harfeld (Winterberger Hochmulde) (333.56) to the northeast.
Protected areas
The northern flank of the Poppenberg falls into the Nameless Valley System nature reserve ( CDDA no. 389837; designated 2008; 89 ha in size) and to the local fauna, flora and habitat area Bergwiesen near Winterberg (FFH no. 4717-305; 4.87 km²). On the mountain there is an area of the landscape protection area part of the city of Winterberg (CDDA no. 325127; 75.33 km²).
Winter sports and hiking
Part of the Skiliftkarussell Winterberg ski area is located on the Poppenberg, with cross-country skiing trails on its east and north flanks, 8 ski lifts with attached slopes . FIS World Cup races have been held on this mountain slope since the 2014/15 Snowboard World Cup . The Rothaarsteig, a long-distance hiking trail that runs particularly along the main ridge of the Rothaar Mountains, leads over the south-east flank .
