EnterpriseDB is a software company based in Bedford , Massachusetts , USA . The company offers additional software and commercial support for the free object-relational database management system PostgreSQL as well as programs for migrating other databases to PostgreSQL. Additional compatibility tools are offered especially for the migration of Oracle database systems .
history
Andy Astor and Denis Lussier founded the company in 2004 with the aim of breaking the database oligopoly. They set out to use equally powerful open source software to cut costs for businesses by up to 90%. They decided on PostgreSQL because this database management system has over 20 years of development history with a lot of experience with large commercial applications. It also has a large, active developer community. Before EnterpriseDB was founded, there was no provider for PostgreSQL databases comparable to MySQL AB for years . Illustra, a company founded by Michael Stonebraker and Gary Morganthaler that also offered support for PostgreSQL, was sold to Informix in 1997.
Today the company tries to establish itself as a direct competitor of Oracle . In April 2009, EnterpriseDB and IBM signed an agreement to make Oracle compatibility for the IBM database system DB2 available using EnterpriseDB technology. The resulting product is marketed by the IBM subsidiary Netezza under the brand name Netezza Migrator . In June 2019, the private equity firm Great Hill Partners announced the acquisition of EnterpriseDB.
Another commercial competitor is EMC² with the PostgreSQL variant Greenplum .
